Help Choose the Winner of the IEEE Engineering Your World Video Competition
As part of IEEE’s 125th Anniversary celebration, the IEEE Engineering Your World video competition asked participants to submit short videos demonstrating their use of science, engineering and technology to make their living spaces more livable, fun, convenient or futuristic.

After reviewing submissions from across the globe, the judges have determined five finalists. The submission that receives the most number of online votes will be named the winner.

Vote for your favorite finalist online at the IEEE 125th Anniversary Web site.

The voting deadline is 7 August 2009.

Circuits and Systems Symposium
The 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2010) is being held 30 May-2 June 2010 in Paris, France. ISCAS 2010 is the world's premier networking forum of leading researchers in the highly active fields of theory, design and implementation of circuits and systems. Sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and supported by the Institut Superieur d'Electronique de Paris, the Symposium will focus on circuits and systems employing nanodevices and circuit fabrics and their implementation cost, switching speed, energy efficiency and reliaility. ISCAS 2010 will include oral and poster sessions; tutorials given by experts in state-of-the-art topics; and special sessions, with the aim of complementing the regular program with topics of particular interest to the circuits and systems community that cut across and beyond disciplines traditionally represented at ISCAS. Relying on Low-Power Chips to Tackle High-Power Problem
You've likely heard of efforts to bridge the digital divide so students who can't afford a home computer can at least have access to computers in school or at the local library. But in many developing nations, that particular gulf is of little concern when the three Rs of a basic education are not even guaranteed because both electricity and teachers are in short supply. To help in that effort, IEEE Fellow Krishna Palem, a computer science professor at Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA, and his group are developing a device that lets children in poor countries learn, despite a shortage of electricity and teachers. Unemployment Survey E-Book Provides Insight Into High-Tech Job Loss
With the unemployment rate for U.S. electrical and electronics engineers (EEs) at an all-time high in the second quarter, an IEEE-USA e-book provides insights into the causes -- and remedies -- for job loss among technical professionals.

The e-book is based on a 2008 survey of unemployed U.S. IEEE members.

The jobless rate for EEs increased from 4.1 percent in the first quarter to a record-high 8.6 percent in the second, according to data released in early July by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The previous quarterly record was 7 percent, in the first quarter of 2003.

The first section of the e-book reports the percentage distribution or mean response for each of the questions in the survey. The second features the results of selected cross tabulations that focus on age and various aspects of employment status. The third highlights the results of a multivariate analysis that focuses on the impact of age on the duration of unemployment when other factors are held constant. The final section compares some of the current results to those in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

“2008 IEEE-USA Unemployed Members Survey: The Results” can be purchased for US$9.95 (IEEE members) or US$19.95 (nonmembers).

Nominations Open for Inaugural Award Recognizing Scientific Entrepreneurs
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the National Postdoctoral Association are accepting nominations for the inaugural Kauffman Foundation Outstanding Postdoctoral Entrepreneur Award, which recognizes and celebrates a scientific researcher who has successfully commercialized his or her discoveries through entrepreneurship. The researcher must have completed postdoctoral research in the United States at some point in his/her career.

Nominations for the award are open to scientific researchers who have completed postdoctoral research in the United States and have founded companies to commercialize their intellectual property. Nominees will be evaluated primarily on their technical innovation and the social value their enterprises have produced.

The researcher selected to win the Outstanding Postdoctoral Entrepreneur Award will receive a U$10,000 honorarium. A second award, the Emerging Postdoctoral Entrepreneur Award, will present a US$2,500 honorarium to a promising postdoctoral entrepreneur. Both awards will be presented at the National Postdoctoral Association's 8th Annual Meeting on 12-14 March 2010, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Learn more
