'Killer Ecosystem' Needed for Mobile Web 2.0
Telecom and mobile application developers desperately need an agreed upon framework of open standards to ensure the next generation of mobile applications are winners with customers, according to a panel of experts at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, California. The consensus is that customers need a "killer ecosystem" and not a "killer app" or combination of applications to help build Mobile Web 2.0 applications and services. IP over cellular, WiFi, WiMax, DVB-H, DMB, and other open standards would allow for the advancement of applications beyond what some on the panel suggested was at Internet 1.0 capabilities. Read more

Lifelong Learning Critical to Every Engineer's Career

Lifelong learning is critical to every engineer's career, IEEE-USA President John Meredith says in a Point of View column for Electronic Design magazine. "Whether you're a recent college graduate, in the middle of your career, or even counting the months until retirement, you must pursue an aggressive plan to stay on top of current technologies." He recommends that young engineers seek challenging assignments because of their learning potential. Read the column

PicoChip Deal with GWT Extends Femtocell Reach

PicoChip is partnering with Global Wireless Technologies (GWT) for a reference design that extends its picoArray platform to support CDMA2000 and EvDO femtocells and picocells, thus covering the entire spectrum of 3G standards. PicoChip already supports WCDMA (HSDPA upgradeable to HSUPA), TD-SCDMA, and WiMAX, all on a single software-defined hardware platform. The reference design from GWT for products such as cellular femtocells and wireless access points supports CDMA2000 and EvDO (including Rev A) for up to 32 users and peak EvDO data rates of up to 3.1Mbit/s. Read more
