Experts Deny Claims of WiFi Radiation Risks

In response to warnings of increased health risks to children in schools that use wireless networks, a growing number of U.K. scientists, health experts, and politicians all agree that more experiments are needed to verify the dangers associated with wireless networks, according to an article published in EE Times. Some critics are concerned about the growth of wireless technology in schools, claiming it has been installed without any investigation into the possible dangers of radiation given off by WiFi enabled computers and wireless routers. Experts, however, say experiments that supposedly reveal potential risks do not take into account basic fundamental measurements and that readings of radiation from wireless technologies are well beneath the U.K. government’s safety limits. IEEE Foundation Awards More Than U.S. $50,000

Six different IEEE Foundation grants, totaling more than U.S. $50,000, were awarded to a variety of interesting proposals. Helping students learn and preserving the history of IEEE were the two main themes running through the winning projects. The IEEE student branch at Middle East Technical University, in Ankara, Turkey, received $10,000 to support a nationwide pre-college website contest while the Clarkstown Central School District in Rockland County, N.Y., is applying a $7,000 grant to support a project geared towards educating young students about how math, science, and technology work together. The IEEE Egypt Section’s Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) group received $10,000 to support the Made in Egypt—Industry-University Linkage Program and the IEEE Education Society’s Student Activities Committee received $5,000 for organizing a student session at the Second International Conference on Interactive Mobile and Computer-Aided Language. IEEE Region 8 received $9,000 toward its program, Launching History Activities in IEEE Region 8, which supports members of the region who conduct oral history interviews with prominent technologists and scientists in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The sole individual grant winner, LeAnn Erickson, received $10,000 in support of an educational documentary called “Top Secret Rosies: The Female Computers of WW II.”  To read more about the winning projects, visit

Coradiant and Splunk Add User Performance Data to Web Analysis

In order to provide a more inclusive analysis of web operations performance, Coradiant and Splunk have joined forces to gain a greater understanding of how users experience their websites. Splunk’s system previously gathered data on networks, platforms, databases, and other entities, but will now collect user performance management information. This includes logs of the pages users accessed, outcomes of user sessions, and any difficulties users came across. Read more

Research Shows Major Jump in Wireless Data Usage by 2011

While wireless data usage is expected to increase nearly 10 times by 2011, questions have risen over whether or not networks will have the capability of handling such an increase, according to research from iGR. The research group came to its conclusions by examining several different types of users ranging from light to medium and heavy data subscribers. Surfing the mobile web and sending/receiving mobile e-mail using a cell phone were the most common activities that iGR found during the course of its research. Read more
