Study Shows Mobile Phones Do Not Pose Brain Cancer Risk
According to the first study to consider the effects of radiation on different parts of the brain, using a mobile phone does not increase your risk of brain cancer. Scientists at Tokyo Women's Medical University compared phone use in 322 brain cancer patients with 683 healthy people and found that regularly using a mobile phone did not significantly affect the likelihood of getting brain cancer. The radiation emitted from different types of phones was also studied to assess the effects on different areas of the brain. While scientists around the world have been monitoring the effects of radio-frequency fields on human health for nearly 60 years, public concern over the safety of mobile phones has grown in recent years as more and more adults and children rely on them for everyday communication. Evidence to date has given the technology a clean bill of health. Read more

Design Squad to be Featured on Jeopardy!

On Monday, 18 February 2008, the U.S. version of the popular television program Jeopardy! will feature a category devoted entirely to Design Squad – the reality television show funded by IEEE and other organizations – as part of its Teen Tournament Week. Footage from Design Squad’s first season will be used to test contestants' knowledge of basic engineering concepts through a series of questions co-developed by Design Squad and Jeopardy! producers. The air date of the category is timed to coincide with National Engineers Week, which takes place 16-23 February. Jeopardy! has an average daily viewership of 12 million and the Teen Tournament series is one of the program's top-rated episodes each year. Design Squad will begin its second season on PBS in April. View episodes

Japan, Sweden and U.S. Earn Top Ranking in Usage Study
A recent study revealed that Japan, Sweden and the United States are ahead of the game when it comes to using telecommunications technologies. Connectivity Scorecard, developed by a London Business School professor, measures a country’s usage of telecom technology on a scale of 1-10. The ratings show which countries are considered “innovation driven economies,” with the United States coming in first place. Russia achieves top honors for “efficiency and resource driven economies,” coming in ahead of India and China. The results “indicate an opportunity for countries to add hundreds of billions of dollars in economic benefit by rethinking how they measure and enable connectivity." Experts say it will be useful to track the changes in rank that these economies experience as the survey continues to monitor each country’s progress over the years. Read more

ISSCC Shines Light on New Advances
Several interesting advancements in wireless technologies were announced earlier this month at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) held in San Francisco, California, USA. The cost of the latest WiFi and Bluetooth technologies are expected to drastically decrease this year and WiMax will soon be implemented into next generation cell phones. Atheros Communications announced new 802.11n and Bluetooth devices featuring an innovative .11n chip with integrated radio and baseband. Additionally, STMicroelectronics disclosed its early work toward bringing both WiFi and WiMax into cell phones. Read more

Top 10 Asian Telecom Predictions for 2008 Revealed
Research house IDC has identified the top 10 emerging trends in the telecommunications industry for the Asian-Pacific region, excluding Japan. These technologies include multimedia applications, streaming devices and eco-friendly communication services. Once the 802.11n standard for wireless LAN is adopted this year, multimedia applications are expected to thrive due to increased bandwidth, security and range. According to IDC, streaming devices will get a boost once High-Speed Downlink Packet Access arrives to provide faster speed for music and video streaming. Video-conferencing and server/datacenter consolidation are also expected to increase this year, reflecting people’s growing concerns over the environment and the need to comply with environmental regulations. U.S. Plan for a ‘Networked Nation’ is Nearly Achieved
Although George W. Bush, President of the United States, has promised affordable access to high-speed Internet service for all Americans by 2007, a report issued by the administration says the goal has not been entirely achieved. Titled “Networked Nation: Broadband in America,” the study outlines the steps that still need to be taken to fully realize this goal. Critics of the report say more data is needed to support its claims of success in meeting the broadband needs of Americans. While high-speed Internet service has flourished in suburban areas, many poor and rural sections of America still lack affordable access. Read more

India IT Companies Rank High on Top 100 Survey
A survey conducted by CyberMedia and Global Services Magazine revealed that 29 India-based Information Technology companies earned a spot among the 100 Best IT Service Providers list. Experts say the presence of companies from India, as well as China, Malaysia, Russia and Brazil on the top 100 list shows the potential of these nations to become viable outsourcing sites. The report revealed that while many IT-services companies were seeking markets in Europe and Japan, others have reinforced proposals for serving the growing domestic Indian market. Read more
