Joel Emer Honored for Bridging Industry-Academic Divide
The IEEE Computer Society, along with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), will present the Eckert-Mauchly Award to Dr. Joel Emer, IEEE Fellow, of Intel, Corp. for pioneering contributions to performance analysis, modeling methodologies and design innovations in several significant industry microprocessors. Emer developed quantitative methods including measurement of real machines, analytical modeling and simulation techniques that are now widely employed to evaluate the performance of complex computer processors. He was also cited for his ability to bridge the gaps that often mark research and development as well as academia and industry. He will receive the 2009 Eckert-Mauchly Award, known as the most prestigious award in the computer architecture community, at the International Symposium on Computer Archtecture, 20-24 June in Austin, Texas, USA. Al Gore to Keynote 22nd Annual Supercomputing Conference (SC09)
SC09, the 22nd annual event in the SC conference series, recognized globally as the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis, has selected former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to deliver the conference keynote address.
SC09 has adopted the theme of “Computing for a Changing World,” and will present a special focus on initiatives related to Sustainability, Bio-Computing and the 3D Internet.
Gore will deliver the keynote presentation on Thursday, 19 November for the anticipated crowd of 11,000 attendees made up of leading computational scientists, researchers and supercomputing experts from around the globe, many of whom work on High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms and supercomputers researching life-changing issues such as disease understanding, drug discovery, renewable energy and global climate change.
Gore has been an evangelist on global climate and energy-related issues since the 1980s. He has lectured around the globe and his climate change documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth” won an Academy Award and was instrumental in his selection as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
“Al Gore has been a champion of applied computing technology for more than two decades,” said Dr. Wilfred Pinfold, General Chair of SC09. “The High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991, often referred to as ‘The Gore Bill’ was undoubtedly a milestone in Internet history. That bill led to formation of the National Information Infrastructure (NII), which Gore labeled the Information Superhighway. We are honored to name Al Gore as our SC09 keynote speaker.”

Computer and Information Technology Conference
The 2009 IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information
Technology (CIT) is being held 11-14 October in Xiamen, China.
Sponsored by IEEE Computer Society, CIT has become a major platform for
researchers and industry practitioners from different fields of
computer and information technology. Each year, CIT attendees
appreciate and benefit from multidisciplinary exchanges in computer and
information technology. Papers will be presented to highlight work that
strives to push beyond limits of existing computer technologies,
including experimental efforts, innovative systems and investigations
that identify weaknesses in existing IT services. For more information,

Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems Conference
The 5th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in
Sensor Systems (DCOSS 2009) is being held 8-10 June in Marina Del Rey,
California, USA. The focus of this conference is on distributed
computing issues in large-scale networked sensor systems (including
algorithms, applications, systematic design techniques and tools, and
in-network signal and information processing). The conference,
sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, will provide a forum for
researchers and practitioners to present their contributions and will
also include keynote addresses by leading researchers, a panel
discussion, and a poster session. Register for DCOSS 2009

Second Life Virtual Community Now Includes IEEE Presence
Second Life®, an online three-dimensional (3-D) virtual world where
residents are able to establish identities (avatars), explore, create
and communicate, now includes an IEEE presence. Referred to as
"inworld" by its residents, this interactive environment is designed to
encourage social networking, collaboration and learning. IEEE has
created a virtual infrastructure and presence to support its staff,
volunteer and member needs within Second Life. This presence is spread
across two islands and serves as a gateway for people to explore and
participate in IEEE activities. Volunteers and members are encouraged
to provide input and further develop the islands. View IEEE in the Virtual World.
