IEEE Presentations from SLA Conference Now Online

The IEEE announced several new initiatives in its online publishing program during a breakfast for the library community at the Special Libraries Association annual conference in Denver in June. IEEE also demonstrated a beta version of scitopia.org, the free federated vertical search portal sponsored by fifteen of the world’s leading science and technology societies, which enables users to explore the research most cited in scholarly work and patents in a single click. Both presentations are currently available online. View them here

IEEE Foundation Gives Grant to Restore Damaged Documents

The David Sarnoff Library in Princeton, N.J., documents technological visionary David Sarnoff's life; the history of radio, television, electronics, and communications; and the history of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA)., received a U.S. $11,346 grant from the IEEE Foundation to help restore a rare collection of papers damaged by floodwaters from an April nor’easter. The entire basement of the library was flooded by water more than 50 centimeters high, damaging many of its historical documents including the RCA Divisional Technical and Contract Reports Collection. The damaged material details research on semiconductor processing, design and manufacturing, computer memory and systems, video cameras, satellites, microwave and radar systems, displays, and consumer video technologies. IEEE Expert Now Releases New Course in SLAM

IEEE Expert Now is now offering a new course in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), taught by Henrik Christensen. Sponsored by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society from the IEEE Robotics & Automation Annual Meeting, this course will provide a general overview of SLAM and the problems related to localization, mapping, and SLAM. Different methods for the representation of uncertainty will be introduced along with their ability to handle single and multi-mode uncertainty representations. Henrik Christensen is the KUKA Chair of Robotics and a Distinguished Professor at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. More information about this course—and IEEE Expert Now, the online education resource that provides the latest information on emerging technologies with a course library of 60 current courses and 20 in development—can be found here
