IEEE Welcomes Fourth Librarian to Client Services Team
IEEE is pleased to welcome the newest member of IEEE's Client Services Team - Mike Buschman.  Mike comes to the IEEE from Microsoft where he was the Collections Management Librarian for 5 years before launching Microsoft's Live Search Academic as Program Manager. Most recently, Mike was a Technical Evangelist at Microsoft supporting Live Search Academic as well as the library digitization and publisher programs for Live Search Books. Named one of Library Journal's Movers & Shakers 2005, Mike holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington's iSchool.

Mike joins existing team members, Rachel Berrington, Ruth Wolfish and George Plosker, supporting IEEE online customers around the world. Among its many activities, the Client Services team:

  • Teaches search techniques that maximize customers' investment in IEEE Xplore
  • Collects and shares best practices through IEEE regional user groups and conference presentations
  • Facilitates internal marketing and promotions of IEEE content and subscriptions

For more information about the IEEE Client Services Team, visit the Client Services Site.

New Study Finds IEEE Journals Rank High in Quality Content
IEEE has once again earned high scores from the ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a study that looks at the influence academic journals have on research within their disciplines. Published by Thomson ISI, the report ranks journals by their impact factor – which is the average number of times articles published over the last two years were cited in the most recent year. The 2006 report, released in June of 2007, shows IEEE continuing to lead the field with the high quality and relevant content published in IEEE journals.

According to the JCR, IEEE publishes:

  • 17 of the top 20 journals in the field of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
  • 10 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications
  • 7 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture
  • 7 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Information Systems
  • 9 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Software Engineering

IEEE also has high-ranking journals in several additional fields of technology including the # 1 journal in Imaging Science & Photographic Technology, the # 1 journal in Automation Control, as well as journals ranked among the top 3 for Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science - Interdisciplinary Applications, Computer Science - Theory & Methods, Manufacturing Engineering, Nuclear Science & Technology, Ocean Engineering, Remote Sensing and Robotics. Making Connections with Students and Faculty

Kristen Fitzpatrick (IEEE), Randy Wallace (University of North Texas), and Tracy Gabridge (MIT) served on an ASEE panel that addressed alternative methods of student and faculty outreach at the 2007 ASEE Annual Conference, held on 24-27 June in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kristen and Randy shared their successes engaging students by mentoring student branches of professional organizations such as IEEE. Tracy discussed the benefits of building faculty relationships and improving collections through a project focused on conference proceedings. These and other ELD (Engineering Libraries Division) presentations at ASEE can be viewed here.

Haven't seen the Luau photos?  More than 100 ELD members and their guests attended the ASEE Engineering Libraries Division Luau, sponsored by the IEEE.  See photos

IEEE Vice-President Named Department Head at Drexel University
Moshe Kam, IEEE Vice President, Educational Activities and Robert Quinn Professor at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, has been named the new head of Drexel’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE). Kam received his Bachelor of Science in electrical and electronics engineering in 1977 from Tel Aviv University, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Drexel University in 1985 and 1987, respectively. An IEEE Fellow, he also serves as a member of the IEEE Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

The ECE Department at Drexel is one of the oldest engineering departments in the United States (established in 1893 as a Department of Applied Electricity).  The department has 35 full time faculty members and educates about 1,000 students (750 undergraduates and 250 graduates). Its annual research expenditures are approximately US$15M with primary research support coming from the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, Lockheed Martin, and the National Science Foundation.

IEEE UCE/SPAM Filtering Service to Change from “OPT-IN” to “OPT-OUT”
To help reduce the increasingly large volume of unsolicited commercial email messages – commonly known as spam – being sent to ieee.org email addresses from outside sources, the IEEE UCE/spam filtering service will be changing from the current “opt-in” policy to an “op-out” policy.”

On 20 August 2007, a default spam filtering level, expected to reduce the volume of email sent to ieee.org addresses by 30 percent, will be applied to all IEEE email aliases. It is designed to filter out email that is extremely likely to be UCE/spam. In the past, this filtering service had to be individually activated by each user.

Those who do not wish to have the default spam filtering level applied to their IEEE email alias can select to “opt-out” at https://uce.ieee.org and choose the “No UCE/Spam filtering” option, or select a more aggressive filter level. After choosing this option, click on “Set UCE/Spam Filtering Level” button to save the changes.  If no action is taken by 20 August, the default spam filtering level will be activated.  Subscribers can opt-out of the filtering service at any time.

For more details on why the new policy was implemented, how the policy will improve email delivery through internet service providers and the aggressiveness of the service, visit https://uce.ieee.org/opt-out-info.html. Questions can be directed to member-services@ieee.org.
