Improve your IEEE subscription with these two new tools from IEEE:

The IEEE Xplore® Toolbar, easily downloaded, provides users with instant access to the IEEE Xplore digital library of premier technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics. Use the IEEE Xplore Toolbar to quickly link to IEEE Xplore content; search IEEE journals, magazines, conference proceedings, standards, and books; and check the latest content updates, usage statistics, and IEEE support updates. You can also download IEEE Xplore search buttons and link directly to IEEE Xplore from your organization’s website. The downloadable search buttons, available in a variety of formats with easy directions for installation, are available through the IEEE Client Services site. See search buttons

 

 

Now Available: IEEE Expert Now Course Notes
IEEE Expert Now subscribers can now get more out of the online courses with take-away course notes outlining the educational tutorials. The new course notes include general information about the course and instructor, an outline of the course, and a detailed description and explanation of each slide in the course presentation. The course notes will allow participants to follow along with the instructor during the online tutorials and provide a convenient reference tool after the course has finished. Inaugural Issue of Systems Journal Published
The inaugural issue of IEEE Systems Journal is now available in IEEE Xplore®. The journal, which was created to provide a systems-level focused forum for application-oriented manuscripts, addresses complex systems and system-of-systems of national and global significance. The first issue of IEEE Systems Journal features articles on processes for system family architecting, design and integration, biologically inspired cooperative routing, knowledge-based multi-agent credit assignments, hierarchical aggregation, and intelligent monitoring. IEEE Supports Local Lectures
Join IEEE at two presentations in New Jersey, USA about the reality of modern academic libraries and significant trends in the academic library field, sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Special Libraries Association 2007 Calendar of Events.

Perceptions & Reality
George Needham, Vice President of Member Service for OCLC, will give a presentation on the perceptions and reality of modern libraries and library services. The presentation, scheduled for Thursday, 27 September 2007, at 5:30 p.m. at the Rutgers Club, Rutgers University – New Brunswick Campus, will focus on research revealed in a comprehensive study by OCLC.

The New Vision of an Academic Library – Design, Tools & Resources & Transitioning from a Corporate Library to an Academic Library – Tips and lessons
Dee Magnoni, Library Director at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, will discuss the development of the Olin College library and where academic libraries, specifically engineering libraries, might develop in the future. The presentation will look at technical, social, political and social trends, and provide tips and lessons learned for transitioning from a corporate to academic setting. The lecture will take place at the IEEE History and Operations Center, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ, Tuesday, 23 October 2007, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Coming Soon – Marketing Your Collection: Best Practices Shop and Swap

In conjunction with the 2007 Annual Charleston Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, join IEEE at a "shop and swap" workshop for e-resources librarians to share marketing ideas and best practices. Speakers will include Barbara DeFelice of Dartmouth College and Karen Hawkins and Ruth Wolfish, both of IEEE. More information will be available soon. Visit IEEE at the 2007 Frankfurt Bookfair
The Frankfurt Bookfair will be held 11-14 October 2007 at the Messegelände Trade Fair Grounds in Frankfurt, Germany. The conference will bring together the entire publishing industry – from authors and publishers, booksellers and librarians, art dealers and illustrators, to agents and journalists, information brokers, and readers. The event is a great opportunity to network among industry experts and is the largest marketplace for trading in publishing rights and licenses. First UK-Area IEEE User Group Meeting to Take Place in London
The first UK-area IEEE User Group meeting is scheduled to take place at London South Bank University on Friday, 16 November 2007 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. All IEEE customers are encouraged to attend. If you have a library in the UK-area, please pass this along to your colleagues. This meeting will provide the opportunity to learn where the IEEE will be going in the future. More importantly, your participation and feedback will help direct future efforts to improve IEEE Xplore and IEEE's relationship with customers. Great Teaching Resource: Standards in Education Website
The IEEE Standards in Education Website provides information and materials related to the various IEEE standards, their applications, and their impact on designing new products, processes, and services. The site contains training modules and case illustrations, providing basic terminology, applications, and examples of the uses of standards within various technical domains. A reference guide offers an alphabetical listing of standards development bodies and standards-related terminologies including acronyms and abbreviations with descriptions and hyperlinks to the relevant websites. Register for IEEE Online Training Seminars
Be sure to register for IEEE’s online training seminar, “Searching with IEEE Xplore®.” The online tutorial provides existing and potential customers with free demonstrations, including tips on how to search in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Additional dates have been scheduled for:

October 11 – 10 A.M.
October 16 – 7 P.M.
November 29 – 10 A.M.

All times are noted in Eastern Standard Time (EST). Advance registration is required for all scheduled seminars and space is limited, so please sign up early.

Discover Tools for a Successful Orientation Program
Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, a publication of the Science and Technology section of ACRL, featured an article titled “Follow the Silk Road to Orientation Success: Promoting Miami University's Brill Science Library” in the summer 2007 issue. Authored by Eric Resnis and Betsy Butler of Miami University and Jennifer Barth of the Irondequoit Public Library, “Follow the Silk Road” outlines the successful launch of an orientation program utilized at the Brill Science Library at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, USA. The orientation program combined many important ingredients, including information literacy, outreach, collaboration, and university-wide involvement. The paper provides details about the planning, implementation, and follow-up required for a highly successful orientation program. Read more

New IEEE Xplore® Content Updates
IEEE Xplore posted new content in 56 publications – including journals, magazines, conference proceeding, and standards – on 4 September 2007. The new updates added the most recent issues of IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and additions to 15 other journals. Twenty-one different conference proceedings were uploaded, including the proceedings for the 2007 Compatibility in Power Electronics, the 2007 International Conference on Image and Graphics, and the 2007 Non-Volatile Semiconductor Memory Workshop. The updates also included 15 new IEEE standards. View the updates
