IEEE Becomes KnowledgeWorks Certified
Building on its promise to provide the best resources for customers, IEEE has completed the Serials Solutions KnowledgeWorks Certification program. Serials Solutions provides a complete family of e-resource access and management services that lets libraries better manage their constantly changing electronic literature collections. The program, which establishes a unique working relationship between IEEE and Serials Solutions, ensures that IEEE’s collection of high quality engineering literature is organized to better meet the needs of customers. Obtaining the KnowledgeWorks certification means customers will be able to take advantage of more Serials Solutions services when searching IEEE content, like the 360 Link OpenURL Link Resolver, the 360 Search Federated Search and 360 MARC Updates. The collaboration between IEEE and Serials Solutions will also allow librarians to easily access and manage the IEEE Xplore® database, customized to their own specific needs.

Open-Access Educational Repository Developed
IEEE is partnering with open-access educational repository Connexions on a major initiative to develop a critical mass of signal processing educational modules and courses that will be available for free access by anyone, anywhere, at any time. This is one of the latest education and outreach efforts by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), as announced by SPS President Alfred O. Hero in the November 2007 issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The educational materials will pass through a careful IEEE-SPS peer review to earn the IEEE brand for quality. Plans are also being made to translate the courses, currently in English, to a number of languages including Spanish and Chinese. The project is already accepting submissions of content for review. IEEE Continues to Update Legacy Content
Originally promised to be 180,000 documents large, the IEEE legacy project topped over 237,000 documents earlier this year as IEEE continues to complete its vision to provide the first volume, first issue release of all its technology journals. The IEEE legacy project is part of IEEE’s plan to digitize all papers from its technology journals and represents a critical evolutionary period that chronicles the development of today's information age. In 2007, IEEE loaded over 90,000 documents into the IEEE Xplore® legacy collection including a complete collection of Proceedings of the IEEE and IEEE Computer Magazine issues; historical digital content from over 40 IEEE titles; and select engineering publications dating back to 1913. IEEE Xplore legacy content is available at no additional charge to subscribers of the IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEL), IEEE Enterprise and IEEE Members Digital Library.

IEEE is Now an OpenURL Source
IEEE has just become an OpenURL source, bridging the gap between IEEE Xplore® and other content sources. OpenURL gives users the opportunity to take advantage of their institution’s holdings in order to easily navigate between disparate electronic resources. The IEEE OpenURL links will be available on the Abstract, AbstractPlus, References, Search Results and Book Page of the IEEE web site. Customers are also able to provide IEEE with custom trigger images or text to promote their library. Currently, the standard text is “Link to your Library Collection.” To set up OpenURL, visit

Toyota Tops 100 Biggest R&D Spenders
IEEE’s Spectrum Magazine has released its 2007 list of the top 100 R&D spenders. At the top of the list is Toyota Motor Corp., which increased its R&D spending by 9.6% from the previous year. Pfizer, Inc. comes in a close second, while Ford Motor Co., Johnson & Johnson, and Microsoft Corp. round out the top five. According to the company, Toyota’s primary R&D investments have been in environmentally friendly technologies such as hybrid gas-electric drive, fuel cells and recyclable materials. While R&D spending is often considered a key factor in a company’s success, Spectrum warns that it is not the only factor that can create an industry leader. A company’s industry, maturity and business strategy all affect overall profit and, in the end, it is not how much money you spend, but how wisely you spend it that matters. Read more
