Access Valuable Information with Applications Notes through IEEE Xplore
More than a million documents containing practical and applied information on engineering topics are now available through the IEEE Xplore® digital library. Known as application notes, the documents have been published by organizations to explain, illustrate or promote their technologies and products. While the documents are not peer-reviewed or created by the IEEE, the application notes provide a bevy of useful technical articles, product specifications and other types of online technical information. To find application notes, simply search for your topic in the digital library. Links to notes are displayed alongside other search results, under their own heading to set them apart from the IEEE information. Clicking on a link takes you to the document on the original publisher's web site. Learn more

CrossRef Launches Free Citation Look-Up Tool for Bloggers
The association behind the well-known publisher linking network, CrossRef, has launched the beta version of a new plug-in that allows bloggers to look up and insert DOI®-enabled citations in the course of authoring a blog. The plug-in, free to download, allows a blogger to use a widget-based interface to search CrossRef metadata using citations or partial citations. The results of the search are displayed and the author can then either follow the DOI to the publisher's site or click on an icon next to the hit to insert the citation into their blog entry. According to Geoffrey Bilder, CrossRef's Director of Strategic Initiatives, "CrossRef is helping jumpstart the process of citing the formal literature from blogs. While there is a growing trend in scientific and academic blogging toward referring to formally published literature, until now there were few guidelines and very few tools to make that process easy." The CrossRef plug-in is currently only available for the WordPress platform, though a Moveable Type version is under development.
CrossRef is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to enable the easy identification and use of trustworthy electronic content by promoting the cooperative development and application of a sustainable infrastructure. IEEE is currently a member of CrossRef and supports its mission to promote the development and cooperative use of new and innovative technologies to speed and facilitate scholarly research. Librarians Teach Tech Skills During Teen Tech Week
More than 1,500 libraries across the country will participate in Teen Tech Week, 2-8 March 2008. The libraries will showcase technology available to teens to enhance their information literacy skills and show them and their parents how to be safe while doing so. Recent research shows that teens use technology more than ever to play video games, surf the Web and listen to music they have downloaded or accessed online nearly every day. However, studies have also shown that the majority of young people lack the critical thinking and information literacy skills needed to use online resources effectively and safely. "Teens and their parents can turn to librarians to help them understand how to use technology ethically and how to be safe while using it," said Paula Brehm-Heeger, President of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), sponsor of Teen Tech Week. Librarians planning events for this year's Teen Tech Week focused heavily on games and music, in keeping with the 2008 theme, "Tune In @ your library." Read more
