Save the Date: IEEE Breakfast and Presentation at SLA

Information professionals and their colleagues are invited to attend the IEEE breakfast at the 2008 SLA Annual Conference this June. Discover why researchers around the world rely on IEEE scientific literature to innovate and why leading organizations access IEEE articles and papers to support R&D, develop new patents and expeditite time-to-market. At the breakfast, IEEE will present tips to demonstrate the value of IEEE information to your organization, highlights from a recent new patent development study of the large impact of IEEE research and upcoming enhancements to the IEEE Xplore digital library. Both IEEE customers and those interested in obtaining access to IEEE online publications are welcome. The breakfast will be held Tuesday, 17 June at the Washington State Convenetion Center at 9:00 am, and registration is requried. Please RSVP to Phyllis Buchta at p.buchta@ieee.org.

First Corporate-Sponsored IEEE University Consortium Established in Uruguay
In a shining example of what can happen when industry meets academics, four Uruguay universities have come together to form IEEE’s first corporate-sponsored university consortium. The consortium, funded by Uruguay’s telecommunications giant ANTEL, includes four schools, both private and public. ANTEL, which has its own corporate subscription to IEEE, provided funding for the venture with hopes of furthering engineering education and technological growth within the Latin American country and surrounding regions. First conceived in 2006, the Uruguay Consortium represents an important partnership between IEEE, private industry and the academic community in Uruguay. By bringing together leading universities and one of the country’s largest companies, the IEEE Uruguay Consortium is a significant step towards providing more exciting and positive opportunities for the nation’s emerging generations within both academia and industry.

Enrique E. Alvarez, IEEE 2008-2009 Region 9 Director expressed his excitement about the consortium, saying “IEEE's core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity” and the new endeavor is a “clear example of IEEE's mission.” The consortium has been made possible by a number of individuals, including Maria Simon, President of ANTEL and Past President of the Uruguay IEEE Communications Chapter; Osvaldo Novoa, Sub Gerente General Comercial at ANTEL; Celia Desmond, IEEE Director and Secretary; and Gustavo Giannattasio, past IEEE Uruguay Chair and candidate for Elected Regional Director, IEEE Region 9. A faculty member in engineering at the Universidad de la República expressed excitement about the IEEE electronic library, saying “I am so grateful to ANTEL for making the IEEE subscription available to us. I can assure them that we are going to use this excellent tool a lot for our work.” The IEEE Uruguay Consortium will provide the universities full access to more than 1.6 million full-text searchable conference and journal articles, including articles from the top-cited journals in a variety of technology fields.

IEEE to Collaborate with International Consortium Developing Open Access Publishing Model
IEEE has announced that it will participate in the SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) initiative, a global effort to develop an open access publishing model that will make peer-reviewed research articles in the high energy physics field available to online users at no cost. As part of the collaboration, IEEE has agreed that relevant articles from IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science may be used to develop the new publishing model proposed by SCOAP3. A letter signed by IEEE expressed interest in the initiative, provided it will result in sustainable funding and business arrangements to support open access publishing. Read more

Join IEEE for a Free Webinar on Photonic Integrated Circuits
Make sure your faculty, researchers and engineers know about the free IEEE webinar, taught by IEEE Fellow Christopher R. Doerr, highlighting the latest advancements in photonic integrated circuits. InP Photonic Integrated Circuits for Fiber-Optic Communications, scheduled for Wednesday, 9 April 2008 at 2:00 pm EDT, will provide an overview of the technology behind InP PICs, focusing on devices for fiber-optic communications that monolithically integrate two or more functions. Ideal for telecommunications design engineers, research and development engineers and engineering managers, this webinar will highlight how InP-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can simplify system designs, reduce space and power consumption, improve reliability and reduce the cost of deploying optical networks.

Christopher R. Doerr earned a B.S. in aeronautical engineering and a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Since joining Bell Labs in 1995, Doerr’s research has focused on integrated devices for optical communication. He was promoted to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 2000, received the OSA Engineering Excellence Award in 2002, and became an IEEE Fellow in 2006. Doerr is also the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters.

Sign up today and receive a complimentary package of IEEE documents for attending.

The Future of the National Science Digital Library
David McArthur, Senior Researcher at GoH and consultant to the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) discusses the benefits for continued investment in the National Science Foundation’s maturing program in the cover story of the February issue of IEEE Computer. The article outlines the past, present and future for the NSDL. Since its inception, the NSDL has provided access to more than 2.5 million digital educational resources, covering science, technology, engineering and mathematics from pre-K to postgraduate levels to support hundreds of research focused projects. Presently, the program has four main tracks for its research projects: Core Integration, a project that coordinates and manages the core library; Services that develop tools to enhance NSDL’s efficiency and value to support users and collection providers; Targeted Research to explore specific topics that have immediate applicability to collections, services and other aspects of NSDL’s development; and Pathways to provide stewardship for the collections and services that major communities require. McArthur sees NSDL “growing both as a platform for improving the productivity of educational resource development and transforming education research and also as a tool for creating and managing scientific knowledge about education and learning.” On a large scale, the program could become a key part of a new cyber infrastructure for education and education research.
