IEEE Hosts Customer Meetings in Three Latin American Cities; Plans Meeting in Germany for Early 2009
Last month, IEEE hosted three important customer meetings in the Latin American cities of Rio, Brasilia and Sao Paolo, Brazil. The meetings, supported by IEEE’s local representative Ebsco Brazil, invited customers and prospects from around the region to learn more about IEEE, our mission and our partnerships with libraries and research communities. George Plosker, IEEE Client Services Manager, conducted an in-depth training on IEEE Xplore® and presented information on Expert Now, IEEE’s online course collection. Interested customers in Germany and Austria will have the opportunity to participate in a similar meeting during the early part of 2009. Look for coming details about this exciting opportunity to provide feedback for ongoing IEEE Xplore developments.

Expert Now Course Teaches Active-RC Filter Design Techniques
Make sure your faculty, researchers, and engineers know that they can learn about the latest developments in active-RC filter design in a course taught by George Moschytz. The Expert Now course, “Design of Active-RC Filters for the Analog Front End (of Integrated Circuit System Chips),” is sponsored by the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society and will focus on active-RF filters as they relate to the concepts of ‘analog front end’. After a review of introductory and basic concepts, the course will consider some of the most important and established active-RC filter-design techniques. Examples, taken from typical modern communication systems, are given for the conversion of classical LCR filter structures into inductorless active-RC filter circuits that are amenable to IC chip design. Finally, filters designed using the design techniques covered in the course are compared in terms of practical performance criteria such as thermal output noise, sensitivity to component tolerances, and tunability. IEEE.tv Releases Two New Programs
Two new free, public access special programs, one featuring a team of female engineering students that are breaking down the stereotypes of women in engineering and the other profiling fascinating and innovative approaches to meeting humankind’s growing energy needs, are now available from IEEE.tv.
Nerd Girls
They’re Beauty and the Geek all in one package! Meet the NERD GIRLS—an impressive team of female engineering students a year away from landing top jobs. Whether building a solar car or harnessing wind power on a remote island, these girls fully intend to change the planet with their own ingenuity and hard work. Working to break the stigmas and stereotypes of women in engineering, the Nerd Girls at Tufts University are engineers who have danced in the Nutcracker ballet, sang at the Apollo Theater, are award-winning pianists and nationally ranked athletes. The engineering team’s task for Nerd Girls is to build a solar car. The program documents this process and shows how successful these students are as they work together to design and construct an engineering system.
The Grid: Energy Innovations—Solar Goes Small
This series profiles fascinating and innovative approaches to meeting humankind’s growing energy needs. A solar panel manufacturing plant that will be the first facility to make renewable energy products using only renewable energy is being built in Cardiff, Wales. While the manufactured solar panels will be for small, personal devices like cell phones and laptops, the panel is not just solar—their technology also generates power using indoor lighting and moonlight. The group plans to target the third world market, enabling millions of potential consumers to skip the traditional interface with the Grid and rely solely on an abundant and free source of energy.
Both of these new programs can be found on the IEEE.tv web site.
