Join Us for the IEEE Breakfast and Presentation at SLA
Information professionals and their colleagues are invited to attend the IEEE breakfast at the 2008 SLA Annual Conference this June. Discover why researchers around the world rely on IEEE scientific literature to be innovative and why leading organizations access IEEE articles and papers to support R&D, develop new patents and expedite time-to-market. At the breakfast, IEEE will present tips to demonstrate the value of IEEE information to your organization, highlight results from a recent new patent development study of the large impact of IEEE research and demonstrate upcoming enhancements to the IEEE Xplore® digital library. Both IEEE customers and those interested in obtaining access to IEEE online publications are welcome. The breakfast will be held Tuesday, 17 June at the Washington State Convention Center, Room 608 at 9:00 am, and registration is required. Please RSVP to Phyllis Buchta at p.buchta@ieee.org.

New Library Journal Study Finds IEEE is Priced 65% Lower Than Other Publishers
In addition to being the industry’s most comprehensive reference resource by providing access to almost a third of the world's current electrical engineering and computer science literature, IEEE is offering that access at significantly lower prices than other competitive commercial publications—further adding to the value of being affiliated with IEEE. Using the same calculation method as the annual Library Journal Periodical Price Survey, which looks at the cost of journal and periodical subscriptions in various industries, the average cost of an individual IEEE journal for 2007 is just US$678. Compare this to the US$1,919 average price of an engineering journal and the value of a subscription with IEEE is obvious—IEEE journals are priced 65% lower than the competition.

Librarians Deliver for IEEE Student Branches
Virginia Tech Engineering Librarian Larry Thompson is well-known to the leaders of his university’s IEEE Student Branch, and not just because he uses resources earned from the IEEE University Partnership Program to support student events, including the annual IEEE Student Professional Awareness Conference. Before a recent Tech Talk by Virginia Tech professor and student branch advisor Patrick Schaumont, Larry sponsored (and helped deliver) the pizza dinner enjoyed by the 40+ students who attended. See photos
Additionally, while the Virginia Tech IEEE Student Branch was recently named Society of the Year by the university’s Engineering Council, Larry was cited by his peers in the Engineering Libraries Division of ASEE as the 2008 recipient of the Homer I. Bernhardt Distinguished Service Award for “work that contributes to the advancement and development of excellence in engineering libraries.”
At Drexel University, Engineering Librarian Jay Bhatt has long mentored student research and professional development activities. Jay’s efforts were critical to the success of the IEEE Technical Poster Symposium, hosted by the Drexel IEEE Graduate Forum (DIG) and supported by the IEEE University Partnership Program. This event earned DIG Student Organization of the Month honors from Drexel’s Office of Campus Activities.

Drexel Symposium Discusses Web 2.0 Impact on Scholarly Communication
The IEEE-sponsored 2008 Drexel Scholarly Communications Symposium, Scholar2Scholar, took place last month with roundtable discussions and panels regarding how Web 2.0 is changing scholarly communication. The featured speaker was Jean-Claude Bradley, Associate Professor, Chemistry, Drexel University, who discussed Open Notebook Science. He then joined panelists Andre Brown, Ph.D. Candidate, Physics & Astronomy, University of Pennsylvania; Nicole Engard, Open Source Evangelist, LibLime; James Mitchell, Associate Professor, Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering, Drexel University; Banu Onaral, H. H. Sun Professor & Director, School of Biomedical Engineering, Science & Health Systems;
Beth Ritter-Guth, Instructor of English & Communication, Lehigh Carbon Community College; and Scott Warnock, Assistant Professor, English & Philosophy, Drexel University. Additionally, Karl Okamoto, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Business and Entrepreneurship Law Concentration, Drexel College of Law, served as the panel moderator.
One of the panel discussions looked at possible hazards of the dependence on technology in scholarly communication, while another discussed research methods and how to access data validity in open science. Other discussions outlined open source technology, talked about the use of Second Life in scholarly communication, and looked at the relevance of academic journals in a Web 2.0 world. Links to pictures of the event and the round table discussions that took place during the symposium are available on the Scholar2Scholar wiki. A webcast of the event is also available.

IEEE Photonics Webinar Now Available On-Demand
Did your faculty, researchers and engineers miss the webinar? The free photonic integrated circuits (PICs) webinar, which took place early last month and was taught by IEEE Fellow Christopher R. Doerr, surpassed expectations with over 350 attendees. The webinar, attended by professionals from around the world, provided an overview of the technology behind InP PICs, focusing on devices for fiber-optic communications that monolithically integrate two or more functions. Doerr also highlighted how InP-based PICs can simplify system designs, reduce space and power consumption, improve reliability and reduce the cost of deploying optical networks. An on-demand version of the webinar is also available. Stay tuned for additional IEEE web events. Encourage your faculty, researchers and engineers to register for the on-demand webinar.
