IEEE Approves Six New Publications for 2009
IEEE has approved six new publications to be released in 2009. The list of new journal titles offers an exciting array of information on emerging and multidisciplinary technical topics:
- IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development
- IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games
- IEEE Embedded Systems Letters
- IEEE Journal of Optical Communications and Networking
- IEEE Photonics Journal
- IEEE Solid State Circuits Magazine
More information about these new publications will be available soon.

Citations to IEEE Journals Continue to Climb
IEEE has once again earned high scores from the ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a study that looks at the influence academic journals have on research within their disciplines. Published by Thomson ISI, the report ranks journals by their impact factor—the average number of times articles published over the last two years were cited in the most recent year. The 2007 report, released last month, shows IEEE continuing to lead the field with the high quality and relevant content published in IEEE journals.
According to the JCR, IEEE publishes:
- 18 of the top 20 journals in Electrical & Electronic Engineering
- 9 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications
- 6 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture
- 5 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Information Systems
- 8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Software Engineering
IEEE also has the #1 journal in several technology fields:
Additionally, IEEE journals are ranked among the top five for Artificial Intelligence; Biomedical Engineering; Computer Science - Interdisciplinary Applications; Computer Science - Theory & Methods; Manufacturing Engineering; Nuclear Science & Technology; Ocean Engineering; and Remote Sensing. New Clustering Tool Now Available in Scitopia.org
Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal created by leading science and technology societies, recently launched a new clustered search tool that allows for easier navigation and document retrieval from the technology-focused site. The six pre-defined clusters—topics, authors, publications, publishers, affiliation and date—can be expanded into multiple sub-categories for quicker, more detailed searching. In addition to the new clustering tool, scitopia.org added additional sorting options and a new function to download citations. The advanced search page has also been streamlined to allow for superior customized results. Visit scitopia.org

IEEE Provides Easy Access to Persistent Links
In order to facilitate linking between a library’s Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and the corresponding IEEE title, IEEE Xplore® provides a table with publication and linking information for journals, magazines, conference proceedings and standards. Persistent linking through IEEE gives librarians the information necessary to build links from OPAC records directly into the publication’s page in IEEE Xplore. The links created from this table will remain intact into the future and links can also be created to a journal or magazine issue’s table of contents. IEEE Sponsors ASEE Welcome Reception
Once again, IEEE sponsored the Welcome Reception for the Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) of ASEE. Approximately 90 people attended the reception, held at the University of Pittsburgh’s Bevier Engineering Library in Benedum Hall. Michael White, Librarian for Research Services, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, organized the event, which featured a selection of local cuisines. Best wishes to host for the evening Kate Thomes, head of the Bevier Engineering Library since 1994, whose retirement began the next week!
