IEEE Xplore® Upgrade Provides New Tools for Users
IEEE recently released several features to its IEEE Xplore® digital library, which powers IEEE online subscriptions for organizations and individuals. Features available through IEEE Xplore 2.5.3 include full-text PDF stamping, full-text PDF banner and integration of MeSH terms, all commonly requested by IEEE Xplore customers.

Both the PDF Stamping and PDF Banner make institutional branding more prominent to users. Full-text PDF Stamping will produce a stamp on each downloaded PDF containing the date, time and institution name, while full-text PDF Banner will produce a web banner at the top of the PDF including the institution name and enabling users to link back to the IEEE Xplore homepage.

Additionally, the new integration of MeSH Terms from Medline—the article index terms created by the National Library of Medicine—will make IEEE biomedical information easier to find for searchers.

For full information on these and other features of the IEEE Xplore digital library, visit the release notes.

IEEE Releases New 2008 Journals
IEEE has published the first issues of three new journals in the IEEE Xplore® digital library.

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies publishes peer-reviewed papers and critical survey papers that describe original research or offer a critical review of learning technologies. The inaugural issue of the journal features extended versions of the seven best papers from the European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning conference, held earlier this year. The theme for the conference, “Creating New Learning Experiences on a Global Scale” is reflected in each of the papers, which highlight innovative research on technology enhanced learning.

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations focuses on the growing field of applications that are encompassed in the Global Earth Observations Systems of Systems (GEOSS) program. The inaugural issue of the journal proposes new ways of dealing with energy, particularly renewable energy, by taking advantage of all the benefits that Earth observations and remote sensing provide.

IET Power Electronics features the most significant and current international research regarding power electronics. Several technology areas are highlighted in the first issues of the new journal, including applications of power semiconductor technology for the control and conversion of electric power; devices used in power electronic applications; techniques for controlling, analyzing and modeling power electronics; and performance management of power electronic systems.

IEEE Expert Now Releases Two New Courses
Be sure to tell your researchers, teachers and students about two new course additions to the IEEE Expert Now collection.

Biometrics: Solutions for Security and Authentication, taught by Kostas Plataniotis and sponsored by the IEEE Educational Activities Department, provides an overview of the study of methods for uniquely recognizing humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. The fundamentals of biometrics and biometric systems and why biometrics is a solution for security and authentication, as well as face, gait and ECG based biometrics will be covered. Biometrics, encryption and future steps for the technology will also be discussed.

IEEE 802.11N Physical Layer, taught by Eldad Perahia and sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, provides a comprehensive overview of the Physical Layer (PHY) technology in the p802.11n draft standard. The course will begin with an overview of the applications, environments, channel models, use cases and usage models developed by the study group and task group which provided the framework for proposal development. A detailed discussion of the standard, as well PHY interoperability techniques, legacy spoofing and auto-preamble detection will also be discussed.

More information about these courses—and IEEE Expert Now, the online education resource that provides the latest information on emerging technologies—can be found on the IEEE Expert Now Web site. Flexible pricing is now available for any size organization! Learn more

IEEE Hosts 2008 Leaders Summit
Fourteen student branch leaders from 10 U.S. universities met at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, NJ, USA, on 3 October to share recent accomplishments, challenges and plans for the coming year at the IEEE 2008 Leaders Summit. Part of the University Partnership Program (UPP), the annual Leaders Summit allows representatives from across the country to build relationships with other student leaders and brainstorm about careers, events, activities and membership growth.

Participating students came from Drexel University; University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; University of California, Los Angeles; University of Michigan; Virginia Tech; Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Texas A&M; University of California, San Diego; and Columbia University.

The summit started with a welcome from Kristen Fitzpatrick, manager of the IEEE UPP, and included presentations on the importance of GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) and volunteering, strategies and benefits of membership, IEEE’s 125th Anniversary Celebration, as well as presentations from the student branches.

“An excellent way to bring the student leadership together” said one student leader, the summit was considered a huge success. Another student representative said that they “learned a lot and the ideas from the other officers were extremely helpful.”

IEEE Seeks Program Evaluators
IEEE, the largest member of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), is responsible for the peer-review evaluation of more than 750 university programs in IEEE fields of interest. To aid in this accreditation role, the IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) is seeking engineering professionals to serve as program evaluators. Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year are being accepted through 15 November 2008. Information packages, including nomination forms and program evaluator qualifications are available for engineering programs and for engineering technology programs.

For further information, contact IEEE EAB Accreditation at eab-accred@ieee.org

New Tutorial Teaches Image Searching for Academia
Teachers, students and other individuals involved in academia can access free training for image searching on the Internet. The new, free-to-use online tutorial "Internet for Image Searching" can assist staff and students within the education sphere in locating images for use in both teaching and learning. The emphasis of the tutorial is on finding copyright cleared images which are available free, facilitating quick access to a vast range of online photographs and other visual resources. The Web site also explains the accepted rules associated with using images in the academic sphere.

Sharon Waller from the HEA/JISC Collaboration commented on the new tutorial saying "This tutorial is an excellent resource for anyone needing to know more about where and how to find images online.  The fact that it concentrates on copyright cleared images will make it even more valuable for busy learning and teaching professionals, researchers and students alike.  It will also serve to inspire confidence in those needing to use images from the web in their work." IEEE Client Services Manager Elected to SLA Board of Directors
The Special Libraries Association (SLA) recently announced the results of its Board of Directors election earlier this month. Ruth Wolfish, IEEE Client Services Manager has been elected 2009 SLA Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect, extending IEEE’s support of SLA. Wolfish has been with IEEE since 2001 and will serve a two-year term on the board—the 2009 year as Chair-Elect and the 2010 year as Chair. “My focus will be to understand and articulate the benefit to our membership for every service or activity,” says Wolfish who believes her job at IEEE helps her understand the concerns of many types of information professionals working in government, corporate, academic and vendor settings worldwide. This year’s election was the first time SLA worked with the candidates to record speeches and interview questions for posting to YouTube. Wolfish and the other newly-elected board members will begin their terms on the SLA Board of Directors on 1 January 2009. Read the press release
