Library Advisory Council Provides IEEE with Critical Feedback
The IEEE Library Advisory Council (LAC) hosted their annual meeting last month in New York City, New York, USA. The meeting allows this group of international corporate, academic and government librarians to discuss important issues and influence the development of IEEE products and policies.
IEEE welcomed two keynote speakers for the event: Glenn Zorpette, Executive Editor, IEEE Spectrum and Siva Viadhyanathan, Associate Professor of Media Studies, University of Virginia (USA). Zorpette detailed the innovative approaches that his small, dedicated staff uses to cover the world of technology with varied media, while Viadyanathan shared his views on “The Googlization of Everything” and how one corporation can impact cultural and information democracy.
Other discussions focused on the future of usage reporting, authentication systems, engineering certification, continuing education and search technologies. Paige Lucas-Stannard, NASA Glenn Research Center, and Helen Josephine, Stanford University (USA), looked at next generation discovery tools and customized information solutions. David Alsmeyer, British Telecom, and Fran Tollenaar, Royal Philips Electronics, discussed issues and opportunities posed by different user tracking systems. The group also reviewed the latest IEEE Xplore® enhancements and those planned for 2009.

New IEEE Expert Now Course Looks at Type-2 Fuzzy Sets
Another new course has been added to the IEEE Expert Now portfolio of continuing education. Introduction to Type-2 Fuzzy Sets and Systems, taught by Jerry Mendel and sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, provides an overview of type-2 fuzzy sets (T2 FSs) and systems. The course locates type-2 fuzzy sets and systems in an educational taxonomy; explains what a T2 FS is and why it is needed; provides careful definitions and pictures of the new terminology of T2 FSs; and discusses important representations for a T2 FS. Using a T2 FS in real-time applications and how obstacles can be overcome is also covered.
More information about this course—and IEEE Expert Now, the online education resource that provides the latest information on emerging technologies—can be found on the IEEE Expert Now Web site. Flexible pricing is now available for any size organization! Learn more

IEEE Seeks Volunteers for Humanitarian Technology Challenge
The Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) is a partnership between IEEE and the United Nations Foundation designed to bring together technical professionals and humanitarians to develop technological solutions for pressing challenges facing humanity. The program is offering a unique opportunity for those experienced in systems engineering to work directly with prominent humanitarian volunteers to address these initial challenges:
- Reliable Electricity – Availability of power for electronic devices
- Data Connectivity of Rural District Health Offices – Capability of exchanging data among remote field offices and central health facilities
- Local Management and Tracking of Supply Distribution – Ensure that supplies are getting to the people that need them in order to maximize the impact of assistance
- Incident Tracking – Determine locations and extent of medical problems in order to focus resources
- Patient ID and Tie to Health Records – Maintain consistent patient records, including when patients visit different clinics and when they relocate.
For more information, visit the HTC Web site. Interested individuals should contact Harold Tepper, IEEE HTC Project Manager, at h.tepper@ieee.org

Proceedings of the IEEE Looks at Distributed Smart Cameras
The October issue of Proceedings of the IEEE considers the future of distributed smart cameras—real-time distributed embedded systems that perform computer vision using multiple cameras. Thanks to a confluence of demanding applications and the huge computational and communications abilities enabled by Moore’s law, this new interdisciplinary field—based upon techniques from computer vision, distributed computing, embedded computing and sensor networks—is rapidly growing. This special issue of Proceedings looks at three categories related to distributed smart cameras: Architecture and Networks; Distributed and Collaborative Image Processing; and Applications and Security Issues. To learn more, please visit the Proceedings of the IEEE Web site.
