IEEE Releases New 2008 Journals
(October 2008)
IEEE has published the first issues of three new journals in the IEEE Xplore® digital library.

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies publishes peer-reviewed papers and critical survey papers that describe original research or offer a critical review of learning technologies. The inaugural issue of the journal features extended versions of the seven best papers from the European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning conference, held earlier this year. The theme for the conference, “Creating New Learning Experiences on a Global Scale” is reflected in each of the papers, which highlight innovative research on technology enhanced learning.

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations focuses on the growing field of applications that are encompassed in the Global Earth Observations Systems of Systems (GEOSS) program. The inaugural issue of the journal proposes new ways of dealing with energy, particularly renewable energy, by taking advantage of all the benefits that Earth observations and remote sensing provide.

IET Power Electronics features the most significant and current international research regarding power electronics. Several technology areas are highlighted in the first issues of the new journal, including applications of power semiconductor technology for the control and conversion of electric power; devices used in power electronic applications; techniques for controlling, analyzing and modeling power electronics; and performance management of power electronic systems.

New Release: IEEE Applications & Practice Magazine
(August 2008)
IEEE recently released its first ePub title in IEEE Xplore ®, IEEE Applications & Practice Magazine. This ePub marks the beginning of a new publishing method that allows for faster publishing of fresh and dynamic content to ensure that information on new topics can be available quickly. Intended to be a source of timely, significant and technically-reviewed articles, tutorials and application notes, the ePub is an add-on to our existing IEEE Communications Magazine. To access IEEE Applications & Practice Magazine, users should visit the IEEE Communications Magazine Web page in IEEE Xplore. View the current issue of IEEE Applications & Practice Magazine

Women in Engineering Magazine
(June 2008)
The second issue of IEEE Women in Engineering Magazine is now available in IEEE Xplore®. The summer 2008 issue focuses on Vitruvian Machines and how women are shaping a robotics revolution. According to Karen Panetta, the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, more and more women are at the forefront of robotics engineering and “not only serve as role models to help attract more women into the field but are also exemplary entrepreneurs.” Panetta, who also serves as the Chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) committee, was recently featured in a Newsweek article about Nerd Girls—a growing segment of women engineers who are challenging the notion of what a geek should look like by mixing girly interests with traditionally techie pursuits. New Clustering Tool Now Available in Scitopia.org
(July 2008)
Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal created by leading science and technology societies, recently launched a new clustered search tool that allows for easier navigation and document retrieval from the technology-focused site. The six pre-defined clusters—topics, authors, publications, publishers, affiliation and date—can be expanded into multiple sub-categories for quicker, more detailed searching. In addition to the new clustering tool, scitopia.org added additional sorting options and a new function to download citations. The advanced search page has also been streamlined to allow for superior customized results. Visit scitopia.org

Open-Access Educational Repository Developed
(January 2008)
IEEE is partnering with open-access educational repository Connexions on a major initiative to develop a critical mass of signal processing educational modules and courses that will be available for free access by anyone, anywhere, at any time. This is one of the latest education and outreach efforts by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), as announced by SPS President Alfred O. Hero in the November 2007 issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The educational materials will pass through a careful IEEE-SPS peer review to earn the IEEE brand for quality. Plans are also being made to translate the courses, currently in English, to a number of languages including Spanish and Chinese. The project is already accepting submissions of content for review. New Tutorial Teaches Image Searching for Academia
(October 2008)
Teachers, students and other individuals involved in academia can access free training for image searching on the Internet. The new, free-to-use online tutorial "Internet for Image Searching" can assist staff and students within the education sphere in locating images for use in both teaching and learning. The emphasis of the tutorial is on finding copyright cleared images which are available free, facilitating quick access to a vast range of online photographs and other visual resources. The Web site also explains the accepted rules associated with using images in the academic sphere.

Sharon Waller from the HEA/JISC Collaboration commented on the new tutorial saying "This tutorial is an excellent resource for anyone needing to know more about where and how to find images online.  The fact that it concentrates on copyright cleared images will make it even more valuable for busy learning and teaching professionals, researchers and students alike.  It will also serve to inspire confidence in those needing to use images from the web in their work."
