IEEE Expert Now Releases Two New Courses
Two new courses have been added to the IEEE Expert Now portfolio of continuing education.
Interconnect Technology for 32 NM and Beyond, taught by Jeff Gambino and sponsored by the IEEE Electron Devices Society, provides an overview of advanced interconnect technologies, including dielectric materials, patterning, metallization, CMP and packaging. New processes will be discussed, such as ultra-low K dielectrics, air-gap structures, low-damage patterning methods, thin barrier and seed layers, refractory metal capping layers and novel CMP techniques. The effect of these processes on performance and reliability will be briefly described and students will gain an understanding of advanced interconnect technologies and their effect on performance and reliability.
Optical Biomedical Sensors, taught by Claire Gu and sponsored by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, provides an overview of various optical biomedical sensors, including both imaging and spectroscopic techniques, and introduce some recent developments in biomedical sensors, such as nanoparticle surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and its application in compact molecular sensors. Students will develop an understanding of various optical biomedical sensors and recent developments in biomedical sensors.
More information about these courses—and IEEE Expert Now, the online education resource that provides the latest information on emerging technologies—can be found on the IEEE Expert Now web site. Flexible pricing is now available for any size organization! Learn more

IEEE Helps Makes Event for Future Women Engineers a Success
Building on its success in attracting young women to engineering, California State University, Long Beach’s (CSULB) College of Engineering recently hosted its eighth annual engineering education conference, “Women Engineers @ the Beach.” More than 250 elementary and middle school girls in attendance learned about the variety of disciplines involved in engineering and related sciences. George Plosker, IEEE Client Services Manager, spoke about how IEEE can help young women build a career on making a contribution for the benefit of humanity. George also elaborated on IEEE’s initiatives to support women in engineering, inviting them to become involved in IEEE Women in Engineering and learn more about the engineering profession. See photos

IEEE Members Receive White House Award for Early Career Scientists and Engineers
Several IEEE Members were among the 67 researchers honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers (PECASE) last month. The PECASE is the nation’s highest honor for professionals at the start of their career. Established in 1996, the award honors the most promising researchers in the Nation within their fields. Nine federal departments and agencies annually nominate scientists and engineers who are at the start of their independent careers and whose work shows exceptional promise for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Call for Proposals: IEEE Real-World Engineering Projects
IEEE is developing curricula for use with first-year students studying electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering and biomedical engineering technology. The program seeks high quality, hands-on, team-based projects that focus on real-world problems whose solutions benefit society. The projects are expected to make the related IEEE fields of interest more relevant to first-year students, and to illustrate how the work of engineers and computer scientists directly impacts society. Completed projects will be disseminated by IEEE for use by faculty in the development of first-year courses. Initial abstracts are due by 31 March 2009. Complete details regarding the call for proposals are available on the IEEE Real-World Engineering Projects web site

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Endorses Two IEEE Computer Society Programs
Top-ranked engineering college Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has announced the endorsement of the IEEE Computer Society’s Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) and Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) programs, which promote a consistent view of software engineering worldwide by establishing industry standards and sharing best practices. Rose-Hulman is an early adopter of the CSDA program, helping to endorse, fund and facilitate the CSDA as an exit exam for its graduates to help prepare them for their professional careers. “This examination verifies, for Rose-Hulman and for employers, that our students did succeed in learning major content of this body of knowledge, and thus that they stand out as qualified bachelor’s-level software engineers,” said Cary Laxer, chair of Rose-Hulman’s Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering.
