IEEE 125th Anniversary Media Roundtable Webcast to Address Emerging Technologies
On 10 March, in conjunction with IEEE’s 125th Anniversary, a live Web broadcast will give viewers an exclusive look at how IEEE members are engineering the future. A panel of top minds in emerging technologies—including biomedical engineering, biometrics, computing, robotics, telecommunications and wireless power—will discuss the global impact their work will have on the way humans interact with each other and technology.
The event, being held at the New Yorker Hotel in New York, USA, will include the following speakers:
- Miguel Nicolelis, Co-Director, Center for Neuroengineering, Duke University Medical Center
- Roy Want, Senior Principal Engineer, Intel Corporation
- Krishna Palem, Professor, George Brown School of Engineering, Rice University
- Katie Hall, Chief Technology Officer, WiTricity
- Rangachar Kasturi, Professor, University of South Florida
- Dharmendra Modha, Manager, Cognitive Computing, IBM Almaden Research Center
- K.J. Ray Liu, Professor, University of Maryland, College Park
The IEEE 125th Anniversary Media Event will take place on 10 March from 10:30 a.m. to noon ET. Pre-register for the Webcast

Join in the IEEE 125th Anniversary Celebration
IEEE GOLD (Graduates of Last Decade) is celebrating IEEE’s 125th Anniversary by carrying IEEE across the globe. Check out this video of IEEE members around the world and find out how you can contribute.
Stanford Salutes IEEE at Dream Job Panel
To help celebrate 125 years of innovation, Stanford University featured IEEE at its recent Dream Job Panel. Speakers included Tekla S. Perry, staff writer and senior editor at IEEE Spectrum, the flagship magazine of the IEEE; Kenyon Kluge from Zero Motorcycles, who thought there must be work for an electrical engineer who also loves motorcycles; and Shannon Bruzelius from Wild Plant Toys who knew his dream job would be making really cool toys. See photos from the event
IEEE also celebrated its milestone anniversary with engineering librarian Larry Thompson and Virginia Tech students at the Student Professional Awareness Conference. See photos
The Columbia University IEEE Student Branch in New York City built on the university’s mission to anchor engineering among broader societal concerns with a sold-out showing of “Iron Man.” Before the movie, the branch featured the IEEE One Voice video. IEEE Produces Two Energy Focused Videos
Highlighting intelligent uses of energy, two videos have been produced by IEEE-USA and the IEEE Power & Energy Society.
A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use
Featuring highlights from several IEEE conferences including Energy 2030 held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in November 2008, this eight-minute video explains the smart grid and its importance for reducing the carbon footprint. A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use includes interviews with several power and energy experts from around the world. The video explains how communications and computing technology can improve electricity transmission and distribution, resulting in significant energy savings. This smart grid will also facilitate the integration of energy from remote and distributed sources. See Smart Grid video
Charging Ahead: The Case for Plug-in Hybrid Cars
Building on the success of hybrid cars that are powered by both gasoline and electricity, the plug-in hybrid is the next logical step in reducing carbon emissions and dependence on oil. The 11-minute video describes how plug-in vehicles will enable consumers to use electricity instead of gas to power cars for local driving. Charging Ahead: The Case for Plug-in Hybrid Cars also features a discussion regarding the potential, technical and economic challenges of bringing plug-in cars to the mass market. See Charging Ahead video
Both videos are also available on IEEE.tv
