See What’s Behind Today’s Patents & Trademarks with Special Tour at SLA
Take the mystery out of the patent process by hearing from a corporate Patent attorney and a USPTO Patent Examiner on how to add value to your institution. Sponsored by the IEEE and planned by several SLA divisions, the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USTPO) will be giving an informational tour of the office on Thursday, 18 June 2009, along with a talk about patent and trademark process. The day will start with a continental breakfast, an overview of the patent process and how information professionals can add value to their customers. USPTO personnel will then talk through the process for a patent application when it is submitted for approval or rejection. The afternoon will include a tour of the main STIC USPTO library and museum, as well as the Public Search room. Contact Ruth Wolfish r.wolfish@ieee.org with any questions.

Worldwide User Groups Educate Customers on IEEE Xplore
Two user groups were held in Germany and China this month to update customers on what’s new with IEEE Xplore. Each presentation included an overview of IEEE publishing, new and upcoming features and content, and tips for effective searching on IEEE Xplore.

The IEEE user group in Germany, held at the Technische Universität Muchen in Germany, was attended by 30 librarians and customers. In addition to the presentation by IEEE staff, attendees were given the chance to provide feedback on upcoming IEEE Xplore developments. See photos from the event, courtesy of the Technische Universität Muchen.

The first user group ever held in China took place at the University of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province and was attended by 97 librarians from 63 universities around the country. The two-day meeting kicked off a new era of partnership between China and IEEE, highlighting how IEEE can serve Chinese customers with the best services and products to advance technological innovation. IEEE Sessions at UKSG Highlight Best Practices for Library Events
"Marketing isn't taught in library school, and I think we're at the point where it should be" said Ruth Wolfish, IEEE Client Services Manager, at an event marketing session held at UKSG earlier this month. The session provided practical tips for creating successful e-resources events. Read highlights from Ruth’s talk

Dee Magnoni from the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering also presented at the Marketing Your Collection session. Dee outlined a strategic approach to interactive library experiences and ways to encourage e-resource usage. Read highlights from Dee’s talk

Special Feature in IEEE Xplore Integrates MESH Index Terms
Added to the IEEE Xplore digital library last year, integrated MeSH terms from Medline make IEEE biomedical information easier to find for searchers. MeSH terms are used by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for indexing articles from 4800 of the world's leading biomedical journals for the MEDLINE/PubMed database. It is also used for the NLM-produced database that includes cataloging of books, documents and audiovisuals acquired by the Library. MeSH terms are currently available for the following IEEE publications:
  • IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine
  • IEEE Trans on Bio-medical Engineering
  • IEEE Trans on Image Processing
  • IEEE Trans on IT in Biomedicine
  • IEEE Trans on Medical Imaging
  • IEEE Trans on Nanobioscience
  • IEEE Trans on Neural Networks
  • IEEE Trans on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering
  • IEEE Trans on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Part B - Cybernetics
  • IEEE Trans on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control
  • IEEE/ACM Trans on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
  • IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications
  • IEEE Trans on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence
  • IEEE Trans on Visualization and Computer Graphics
  • The Annual International Conference of the IEEE EMBS
