Proceedings of the IEEE Examines Radio Telescopes
The development of astronomy over the past decade has led radio astronomers to concentrate on both the highest and lowest ranges of the radio spectrum. The August Issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE, “Advances in Radio Telescopes,” discusses the realization of new instruments, the status of several giant radio telescopes, as well as other advances that are enabling astronomers to better understand the physical process of the birth of stars and galaxies, and the development of the universe as a whole.
Larry R. D’Addario (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology); A. Richard Thompson (National Radio Astronomy Observatory); and Jacob W.M. Baars (retired Associate Director of the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Radioastronomie in Germany) were guest editors for this issue. “By combining data from telescopes in all regions of the electromagnetic spectrum—from Gamma rays to long radio wavelengths—we get a much better picture of how galaxies and stars are formed and evolve,” explains Baars. “The new radio telescopes described in the Special Issue will improve this view greatly.” Read the August issue of Proceedings of the IEEE

Global Series of Anniversary Celebrations Continues in San Jose & Beijing
The global series of eight IEEE 125th Anniversary celebrations—which has already passed through Munich, Germany; Austin, Texas, USA; and Boston, Massachusetts, USA—continues in Bangalore, India; San Jose, California, USA; and Beijing, China.
The Bangalore event, taking place on 29 August will feature a keynote address from Dr. A. P.J. Adbul Kalam, the 11th President of India. The Computer History Museum hosts the San Jose event on 16 September, with special coverage on IEEE's 125 years of Engineering the Future and recognition of San Jose's countless contributions to technology. The Beijing event will be held at the Presidential Beijing on 22 September and feature the awarding ceremony for the First All China IEEE Student Paper Contest.

IEEE Participates in Military Libraries Division Wreath Laying
The Military Libraries Division of SLA honored service members at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, USA. On 13 June, four MLD representatives helped honor America’s heroes by laying a wreath at the Tomb, which is considered one of the USA’s most hallowed memorials, holding the remains of servicemen from World Wars I & II, and Korea. MLD Members Jim Dorsey, Sharon Butcher and Monika Maslowski, along with IEEE Representative Bill Cook, were chosen in part because of their prior military service. Read more

New E-Books Provide Insight into High-Tech Job Losses; Innovation
Two new e-books, available from IEEE-USA, provide solutions for the current economic situation and look at how innovation can create economic value.
With the unemployment rate for U.S. electrical and electronics engineers at an all-time high in the second quarter, an IEEE-USA e-book provides insight into the causes—and remedies—for job loss among technical professionals. 2008 IEEE-USA Unemployed Members Survey: The Results is based on a 2008 survey of unemployed U.S. IEEE members.
Doing Innovation: Creating Economic Value is the first of four e-books that looks at what innovation involves, what it takes to be an innovator, and what it takes to develop a culture where innovation can thrive. The series was developed to help people learn and apply the fundamentals of innovation in the context of their organization’s purpose and associated values.
Both e-books are priced at US$9.95 for IEEE members or US$19.95 for nonmembers, and can be purchased on the IEEE-USA web site.
