Two University Partnership Programs Launch in China
IEEE successfully launched the first international
University Partnership Programs (UPP) at two top universities in China—Peking University and Tsinghua
University, both in Beijing. The two UPP launches were held in the Peking
University library and Tsinghua University library, with around 200 students
and librarians participating in the events. IEEE UPP Manager Kristen
Fitzpatrick and IEEE Client Services Manager Qing Li attended the launches,
sharing valuable IEEE student resources with the attendees—including scholarship, fellowship and
competition information. The IEEE UPP builds connections between IEEE,
university libraries, faculty and IEEE student branches, facilitating
information literary and promoting student leadership. See photos from the event

IEEE Presents at Chinese Librarian Conference
The Fourth Chinese
Librarian Conference “Knowledge and Discovery in the New Technological
Landscape” was held on 24-26 September in Dalian, China. About 280 librarians
and publishers attended this meeting to share the latest library trends and
their experiences. IEEE Client Services Manager Qing Li gave a presentation
“Scientific Data as a New Component of Library Service” and received very
positive comments from Chinese librarians. The presentation described the
on-going progress of scientific data work in both the US and China, then
provided suggestions for Chinese librarians on how to serve the emerging
E-science community in the future. View presentation

Proceedings of the IEEE Focuses on Organic Electronics
With the success of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDS),
organic electronics has established itself as a viable commercial technology in
RFIDs, e-readers, photovoltaics and optical communications. The September issue
of Proceedings of the IEEE discusses
the advantages of organic semiconductors—in particular, its high chemical
tunability and ability to process over large areas and at low temperatures.
“Since it is impossible to cover all aspects of organic
electronics, this issue captures a cross section of established technologies
that are using organic semiconductors today, along with emerging photonic
devices” says Jay Lewis, who is joined by K.S. Narayan, Yutaka Ohmori and
Jeremy Burroughes as Guest Editors. View

IEEE Ratifies 802.11n Wireless LAN Specification
The IEEE Standards Board has ratified
the IEEE 802.11n-2009 amendment, defining mechanisms that provide significantly
improved data rates and ranges for wireless local area networks (WLANs). This
new amendment to the IEEE 802.11 base standard is designed to help the data
communications industry address the escalating demands placed on enterprise,
home and public WLANs with the rise of higher-bandwidth file transfers and
next-generation multimedia applications. WLANs based on IEEE 802.11 are widely
deployed, with more than one million units shipping per day.
Over 400 individuals from equipment and silicon suppliers,
service providers, systems integrators, consultant organizations and academic
institutions from more than 20 countries participated in a seven-year effort
leading to IEEE 802.11n’s ratification. For more information on IEEE Standards,
