IEEE Celebrates 125th Anniversary with IEEE Xplore Customers
George Plosker, the Silicon Valley based IEEE Client
Services manager has been eating quite a bit of cake lately. Specifically, IEEE 125th Anniversary cake at
events held at IEEE Xplore client
sites. This month, George has been to UC
San Diego, USC, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
At the two schools, each event drew over 125 attendees
including faculty from the engineering schools, IEEE student members, and
librarians who administer IEEE Xplore
at their campuses. These events were
designed to increase networking among the IEEE communities and succeeded with
all having a good time and enjoying refreshments. Short presentations included
recognizing IEEE award winners and recently promoted Fellows, a history and
update on IEEE, and introductions to the Student Chapter activities.
At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Barbara Amago,
Supervisor of the Library Group, was recognized for receiving the NASA
Exceptional Service Medal for her tireless efforts "to ensure NASA mission
success by providing JPL researchers the top-quality information required for
winning proposals, solving time-critical problems, designing experiments, and
developing technologies crucial to NASA." See

IEEE Seeks Volunteers for Humanitarian Technology Challenge
The Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) is a partnership
between IEEE and the United Nations Foundation designed to bring together
technical professionals and humanitarians to develop technological solutions
for pressing challenges facing humanity. The program is offering a unique opportunity
for those experienced in systems engineering to work directly with prominent
humanitarian volunteers to address these initial challenges:
- Reliable Electricity –
Availability of power for electronic devices
- Data Connectivity–
Capability of exchanging data among remote field offices and central
health facilities
- Individual ID – Maintain
consistent patient records, including when patients visit different
clinics and relocate.
Be part of the technology solutions of the future and help benefit
humanity. Learn more about the Humanitarian Technology Challenge by visiting
the HTC Web site.
