New Institute for Nano-Engineering Engages, Mentors Students
Forming the National Institute for Nano-Engineering (Nine), the U.S. federal government joins industry and academia to engage students in nanotechnology projects and increase American competitiveness in engineering and science. Nine will operate under the auspices of Sandia National Laboratories, with industry partners providing mentoring, research facilities and expertise to enrich programs at participating universities. Under the new institute, students will rotate among university labs, industrial partner facilities, and the Sandia hub – depending on requirements of the Institute’s projects in nanoelectronic, nanoenergy, and nanomanufacturing. Participants will range from freshman engineering students to graduate students in engineering and basic science. The program also includes outreach to teachers and precollege students. Read more

Partnerships with Leading Universities Inspired
Toronto-based Nortel, already investing in approximately 50 technology innovation initiatives worldwide, is now focusing on 4G mobile broadband. Its goals include improving spectral efficiency and decreasing time to market for such solutions as Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) cellular standards. Nortel is expanding its research partnerships with Canada’s University of Waterloo (to test and develop next-generation wireless technologies); USA’s University of Texas at Austin (on advanced multi-user MIMO technologies), and Taiwan’s National Taiwan University (on delivery of enhanced capabilities over 4G WiMAX). New partnerships include Mera Networks (Russia) and Technische Universitaet Ilmenau (Germany) to develop advanced combinations of spatial processing and MIMO technologies. Nortel’s collaborative research supports a new era of communications marked by hyper-connectivity, where all things and information are connected to an intelligent, pervasive mobile broadband network. IEEE University Partnership Program Hosts Second Student Branch Leadership Summit

Student Branch Leaders from universitites across the United States will gather 4-5 October at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, New Jersey, USA, for the second annual Leaders Summit sponsored by the IEEE University Partnership Program (UPP). The IEEE UPP develops unique educational and networking opportunities for the students, faculty, and librarians at 13 member schools, including UCLA, Stanford, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, UC San Diego, MIT, Dartmouth College, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Drexel Univeristy, Columbia University, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Through formal presentations and informal networking, student branch leaders learn from each other and IEEE staff how to develop professional networks, enhance leadership skills, stay current on emerging technologies and trends, and build a stronger IEEE community on their campuses.

Innovative Medical Device Designed
A Michigan State University (U.S.) group has engineered a diagnosis system that provides inexpensive screening for a variety of medical problems. Focused on developing a device to help address the lack of affordable health care in China, the group teamed with students from China and Italy on the project. The multifunctional device, which has earned a finalist spot in the Global Mondialogo Award competition, can measure blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, temperature, glucose level, and perform an electrocardiogram. Simple and safe to operate by trained volunteers or even patients, the device is designed to be available for free use in rural hospital lobbies. An online database system for patient records and a wireless monitoring system will expand use by doctors and other hospital workers. Originality and quality, as well as a high level of intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange, moves the MSU design to the finals of the 2007 Mondialogo Engineering Award competition. Nominated to the finals by DaimlerChrysler and UNESCO, the MSU team will compete with 29 other entries in Mumbai, India during December. Read more

WPI Researchers Develop Lifesaving System
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) recently received a million dollar grant to design a multifunctional system for emergency workers capable of locating people and monitoring vital signs – even in burning buildings. The system, which uses radio signals to pinpoint the exact location of the person wearing it, can also measure skin temperature and heart rate. Expected to help firefighters and other emergency responders, researchers hope to release the device commercially in two years. Read more
