Online Portal Planned for Engineering Students Seeking Projects
Engineering students faced with the difficulty of locating projects from companies can now access them online and consult with mentors via the Internet. A project space is expected to be set up by September through the Board of Information Technology Education Standards, a non-profit group created by the Karnataka government in India. Once students are given an ID and password, they can enter the portal and gain access to lists of available projects from various companies, with electronic mentors on hand to offer guidance.

Free Software Operating System Eyed
A free software operating system has been introduced by the author of the Free Software Foundation and GNU Project. As a variation of Linux, this new software is expected to provide solutions to the difficulties in installing and uninstalling software. The system, known as e-Swecha, will be installed in roughly 21,000 computers across the state of Hyderabad, India, over the next month. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad, India will publicize the application of this software in colleges and many high schools in some Indian states have already switched over to the free software.

High School Program Puts Focus on Green Technology Education
With its technology-based learning lab, Whitmore Lake High School in Michigan (USA) is aiming to provide their students with a stronger focus on environmentally friendly education with a full-year alternative energy sources program. The opening semester begins with an overview of renewable and alternative energy sources, followed by opportunities for extensive research, experimentation and demonstration projects in the second semester. The program, which began in 2007, offers students the ability to create solar-powered cars, build wind-turbine propellers and cook with solar ovens, among other projects.

UB Student Engineer Takes First Place in National ‘Extreme Engineering Challenge’
A student at the University at Buffalo in New York (USA) has risen to the highest honor in the 24-hour “Extreme Engineering Challenge,” a national contest conducted at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Conference in Phoenix, Arizona (USA). Richard Linares earned the award for his team’s efforts in creating the most efficient water supply system that could be used for poor Latin American regions. While Linares was chosen for his engineering work and team leadership skills, the “Playground H20” winning team members shared US$4,000 in prize money.

Student Engineers at UCF Aim to Bring Clean Water to Haitian Villagers
A group of student engineers in the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Engineers Without Borders chapter are working on a project that will bring clean water to a Haitian village. For the thousands of residents who live in Mare Brignole, Haiti, the closest available water supply is a polluted mountain spring three miles away. The UCF students plan to create and raise funds for a cistern-based entity to provide clean water to the residents. The project includes constructing a water-containment system that will gather water from the roofs of two community structures and store it in large cisterns. An elementary filtration and disinfection system is expected to be part of the plans as well, along with the building of composting latrines.

Why You Should Stick With IEEE
Each year about half the IEEE student members who graduate don't renew and move up to full members--they just drop out. But if they don't renew, these graduates will miss out on a load of benefits that could come in handy as they enter the workforce. View the top reasons you should keep your membership after you graduate
