IEEE is commemorating its 125th Anniversary this year with a variety of activities surrounding the theme of "Celebrating 125 Years of Engineering the Future." Major anniversary events include the first IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition for college and university students worldwide; a global media roundtable and web cast addressing emerging, world changing technologies; a series of celebrations in major world cities throughout the year; and IEEE Engineering the Future Day on 13 May 2009. Learn more about these events, and ways you can participate in the celebration, on the IEEE 125th Anniversary Web site

Students Reach Out to Foster Female Interest in Engineering
Two students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) gave a presentation to groups of female students at South Lyon High School, Michigan, USA to raise awareness about the potential career opportunities available to women in the engineering field. Although engineering has largely been seen as a male endeavor, the speakers encouraged the young women to pursue careers in engineering and offered additional data on the available programs in this field. Program Provides Engineering Students with Support and Outreach
In an effort to aid the development of high school students in the sciences and engineering fields, a group of engineering students at UAHuntsville Institute for Science Education in Alabama (USA) are embarking on an initiative that aims to foster learning opportunities in these fields for high school and college students. UAHuntsville has partnered with another agency to help the local high schools provide engineering education at the high school level, a plan that is part of a larger movement called the Engineering Academy Initiative for Alabama. As part of North Alabama Engineering Academy, UAHuntsville provides high school students with pre-engineering classes as elective courses which include opportunities for various projects, including demonstrations of how to operate wind tunnels and Lego NX Robotics kits. The goal of the program is to create opportunities for current engineering students to be mentors and lead experiments with the high school students. Read more

Is Any Job a Good Job?
A Forbes article looks at whether, in this time of financial upheaval, job seekers should settle for positions that don't represent the next logical step along their career trajectories. The article acknowledges that someone is likely to take a job for which they are overqualified or one that may be only tangentially related to their field once his or her severance and savings have dried up and they still haven't gotten over the habit of eating every day. But it advises against doing so. "The ultimate goal is to find something that fulfills you professionally. The last thing you want is to start another job search in six months," says the article. But in the event that you can't afford to be choosy, it suggests a risky strategy: asking the hiring manager whether they are willing to offer the equivalent of a temp-to-permanent arrangement, with you signing on for a few months and then re-evaluating your role. Students Create a Device that Allows Their Teacher to Type
A teacher in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, has regained the ability to use his lost hand again thanks to a prosthetic device designed by his students. After receiving a project to invent a tool for people with disabilities, a group of his former students created the Handy Typer, a mechanism that allows a person to type without the full use of a hand. The project earned a spot in the finals at the National Junior Engineering Technical Society competition in Washington, D.C., USA. Read more

Mechanical Engineering Program Unveiled
A program in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin (USA) is seen by some experts as the breakthrough needed to make the Permian Basin a leader in nuclear energy. Since mechanical engineering is the first step toward nuclear engineering, UTPB is looking to capitalize on the production of the nuclear industry in eastern New Mexico and western Texas. As incentives for joining the program, the university offers students scholarships, full tuition, books, room, board, a stipend and other benefits. Since the program is open to students from all over the Permian Basin, many students can transfer from community colleges in the area. Read more

Students Hold Pakistan's Biggest IEEE Event
The first-ever IEEE TechFair had a bit of everything: senior engineering projects, competitions for engineering students and young people – some of them of kindergarten age - and a student congress. More than 350 people from across Pakistan attended IEEE TechFair 2008, held at Government College University, in Faisalabad. Read more

Student Engineering Group Presses Governments, Institutions for No Reductions in Aid
After a recent Congress in Ottawa, a group of more than 50,000 engineering students across Canada has pleaded with governments and educational institutions not to reduce funding for science and engineering programs. Known as the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students, the group has filed a statement on their position and plans to issue it to the federal and provincial governments. As a result of the stock market crashes, many capital projects and endowment funds have either been held off or reduced, yet leaders of the group hope to show governments and educational institutions how beneficial a well-equipped workforce is for the economy.
