Biomedical Engineering Student Recognized as IEEE's 'New Face of Engineering'
Guruprasad Madhavan, 29, a doctoral degree student in biomedical engineering at Binghamton University, State University of New York, was selected as IEEE/IEEE-USA's 2009 "New Face of Engineering" - one of 14 engineers recognized for this international honor. Madhavan is working on neuromuscular stimulation approaches that may help prevent osteoporosis, heart failure and mild cognitive impairment related to low blood pressure.

The New Faces of Engineering is sponsored by the National Engineers Week Foundation. The program highlights the vitality, diversity and rich contributions of engineers under 30.

Members Invited to Join in a Global, Video 125th Celebration
As part of IEEE’s 125th Anniversary celebration, IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) have started their own virtual event by inviting members to create short, 10-second, video clips that will be connected to an anniversary video with worldwide participation. The Gold Around the World video makes it appear that IEEE’s 125th Anniversary mark is being passed from person to person, and from place to place. The video guidelines and specifications for making and posting video clips can be found at the Gold Around the World Web page.

See what other activities are planned around the world on the new interactive events map.

2009 IEEE EDS Ph.D. Student Fellowship Program
The IEEE Electron Devices Society invites the submission of nominations for the 2009 Ph.D. Student Fellowship Program. The award is presented annually to promote, recognize and support Ph.D. level study and research within the EDS field of interest. At least one fellowship is awarded to a student in each of the following geographical regions every year: Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific. The award is a check for US$5,000 and a plaque presented at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM). The deadline is 15 May 2009. RuBee Established as an IEEE Standard
IEEE has approved a new radiating, transceiver protocol operating at wavelengths below 450 Khz, and works in harsh environments with networks of many thousands of tags and has an area range of 10-50 feet. The IEEE 1902.1 standard is expected to be used in healthcare, high security government facilities, aerospace, government armories, livestock management and mobile asset management. "RuBee tags are ideal in situations where bandwidth is not an issue, but where low cost, high tag count, long battery life and use in harsh environments, such as near steel and water, are critical performance criteria", said John K. Stevens, CEO & Chairman of Visible Assets Inc. and chair of the IEEE 1902.1 working group.

IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society Sign Merger Agreement
Last month, IEEE signed a merger agreement with the honor society ETA Kappa Nu (HKN), a nonprofit, public-service organization comprising nearly 200 university chapters. The merger, which will go into effect by mid-2009 pending final approval, will make HKN the official honor society of IEEE, recognizing scholarship and academic excellence and identifying student leaders, young professionals and eminent scholars in IEEE’s technical fields of interest.

Under the agreement, HKN will become an organizational unit of IEEE, governed by the new IEEE-HKN Board of Governors. A restricted endowment will be created in the IEEE Foundation to support HKN’s educational, societal and recognition activities. In addition to holding HKN’s current assets, the new endowment will receive an initial donation of US$1.2M from IEEE. Read more
