Call for Papers: IEEE DySPAN 2010

The IEEE Symposium on New Frontiers in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks (IEEE DySPAN), the international event dedicated to the latest emerging wireless technology research and next generation smart radio system demonstrations, has announced 15 October 2009 as the “Call for Paper” deadline for its upcoming event, being held 6-9 April 2010 in Singapore. IEEE DySPAN 2010 will provide a unique forum for spectrum regulators, academia and research engineers to share their advancements and experiences in this emerging area.

IEEE DySPAN 2010 welcomes contributions highlighting cognitive radio policies and regulations, dynamic spectrum access studies, algorithm and protocol design as well as architecture, platform and signaling applications. Specific subject areas include:
•    Efficient and broadband spectrum sensing
•    Spectrum sensing mechanisms and protocol support
•    Interference metrics and measurements
•    Radio resource management and dynamic spectrum access networks
•    Applications of DSA (e.g., public safety, cellular access networks)
•    Business model/Pricing for dynamic spectrum access
•    Market trends for secondary spectrum usage
•    Regulations for dynamic spectrum access

Proposals for demonstrations, panels, and tutorials are also welcomed. For more information, visit the conference Web Site.

Second Life Virtual Community Now Includes IEEE Presence

Second Life®, an online three-dimensional (3-D) virtual world where residents are able to establish identities (avatars), explore, create and communicate, now includes an IEEE presence. Referred to as "inworld" by its residents, this interactive environment is designed to encourage social networking, collaboration and learning. IEEE has created a virtual infrastructure and presence to support its staff, volunteer and member needs within Second Life. This presence is spread across two islands and serves as a gateway for people to explore and participate in IEEE activities. Volunteers and members are encouraged to provide input and further develop the islands. View IEEE in the Virtual World.

New Toolkit Helps Strengthen IEEE's Brand

IEEE members, students, staff and volunteers frequently design newsletters, brochures, posters, Web sites and other communication media incorporating the IEEE brand. But until now there was no clear guidance on how to depict the brand in visual designs, which resulted in a wide range of looks and messages. The new online Brand Identity Toolkit aims to resolve that issue. The kit provides examples that can be used to create materials that support IEEE’s message in a uniform and effective manner. IEEE.tv Wins National Awards

IEEE.tv has been selected as a winner in two categories, and a finalist in two others, in the 19th Annual Aegis Awards competition. The Aegis Awards are the video industry's premier competition for peer recognition of outstanding video productions and non-network TV commercials. These programs were recognized for their outstanding production quality in their respective categories by a distinguished panel of judges representing industry professionals from around the country.

The following is a breakdown of the IEEE.tv programs recognized this year:

Care Innovations: Responsibility for Being Green

Winner
Category: Documentary
Producer: Peter Wiesner, Technical Activities

This program takes a look at the challenge of minimizing the environmental and health impacts of electronics manufacturing. Discussions focus on the responsibility of industry, government, academia and the general public to foster the development of public policy and the enforcement of laws to safeguard health and the environment.

IEEE Robot Challenge

Winner
Category: Training/Education
Producer: Jay Gamerman, IEEE Baltimore Section
Producer: Noel E. Bryson, IEEE.tv

This program shows how members of the Baltimore Section of IEEE have organized the Robot Challenge, which brings to life the excitement and fulfillment of being an engineer, and encourages high school students to consider this challenging profession.

Nerd Girls

Finalist
Category: Promotional/Sales
Producer: Karen Panetta, IEEE Women in Engineering
Producer: Noel E. Bryson, IEEE.tv

Working to break the stigmas and stereotypes of women in engineering, Tufts University's "Nerd Girls" has female engineers who have danced in the Nutcracker ballet, sang at the Apollo Theater, are award-winning pianists and nationally ranked athletes. The engineering team task for the "Nerd Girls" is to build a solar car. This program documents this process and shows how successful these students are as they work together to design and construct an engineering system.

2008 IEEE Honors Ceremony

Finalist
Category: Event
Producer, IEEE Awards Department
Producer: Noel E. Bryson, IEEE.tv

The annual IEEE Honors Ceremony, considered to be IEEE's most prestigious event, recognizes exceptional contributions that have made a lasting impact on technology, society and the engineering profession. The program honors achievements in industry, research, education and service. There were 22 Institute-level award recipients recognized at the 2008 IEEE Honors Ceremony.
