IEEE Announces Winners of Global Student Competition
IEEE announced the top prize winners of its inaugural IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition 25 June at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in Los Angeles, California, USA. The competition recognized students who developed unique solutions to real-world problems using engineering, science, computing and leadership skills to benefit their community and/or humanity as a whole. The IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition is part of the global celebration of IEEE's 125th Anniversary.

More than 200 students took advantage of the opportunity to have their ingenuity and enthusiasm for engineering and technology recognized by prestigious IEEE members worldwide. A panel of judges narrowed down the entries to a list of 15 finalists, and IEEE's immediate past, present and future presidents selected the  winners based on the results their project achieved as well as the overall impact on humanity or their local community. Representatives from the top three teams accepted their awards in-person during the IEEE Honors Ceremony. It was the first time that students were recognized at this annual event. Read more

IEEE Computer Society Scholarships and Awards Available

Two scholarships and awards are currently available to students who are IEEE Computer Society members. The deadline for both is 31 October 2009.

Lance Stafford Larson Student Scholarship
Established in 1983, the Lance Stafford Larson award encourages students to develop excellence in their communication skills and motivates them toward achievement in the field of Computer Science. One award of US$500 is given each year to the first place winner. First, second and third place winners also receive a certificate of commendation and a writing implement. This award is presented for the best student paper. Only papers concerning computer related subjects are eligible. Papers will be judged on technical content, writing skill and overall presentation. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon Student Award for Academic Excellence
The Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) wishes to encourage academic excellence for students in the computing discipline. The UPE initiated this award with the IEEE Computer Society, as the largest association of computer professionals, to raise the importance of academic achievement in our future computer professionals. Up to four awards of US$500 each are given each year to competition winners. Winners also receive a certificate of commendation, and a periodical subscription for one year. The UPE award criteria requires the same minimum grade point average that UPE membership requires, which is currently a minimum of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0. Judging will be based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities related to the discipline of computing, and letters of recommendation.

IEEEXtreme 2009 Planning is Underway
IEEEXtreme is an IEEE MGA Student Activities Committee program, creating a worldwide 24 hour programming contest for IEEE Student Branches.

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE Member, compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems.

Mark your calendars for 24 October 2009.

Relying on Low-Power Chips to Tackle High-Power Problem
You've likely heard of efforts to bridge the digital divide so students who can't afford a home computer can at least have access to computers in school or at the local library. But in many developing nations, that particular gulf is of little concern when the three Rs of a basic education are not even guaranteed because both electricity and teachers are in short supply. To help in that effort, IEEE Fellow Krishna Palem, a computer science professor at Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA, and his group are developing a device that lets children in poor countries learn, despite a shortage of electricity and teachers. Unemployment Survey E-Book Provides Insight Into High-Tech Job Loss
With the unemployment rate for U.S. electrical and electronics engineers (EEs) at an all-time high in the second quarter, an IEEE-USA e-book provides insights into the causes -- and remedies -- for job loss among technical professionals.

The e-book is based on a 2008 survey of unemployed U.S. IEEE members.

The jobless rate for EEs increased from 4.1 percent in the first quarter to a record-high 8.6 percent in the second, according to data released in early July by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The previous quarterly record was 7 percent, in the first quarter of 2003.

The first section of the e-book reports the percentage distribution or mean response for each of the questions in the survey. The second features the results of selected cross tabulations that focus on age and various aspects of employment status. The third highlights the results of a multivariate analysis that focuses on the impact of age on the duration of unemployment when other factors are held constant. The final section compares some of the current results to those in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

“2008 IEEE-USA Unemployed Members Survey: The Results” can be purchased for US$9.95 (IEEE members) or US$19.95 (nonmembers).
