WiMedia Alliance Members Earn Certification for First Ultra-Wideband Products
The not-for-profit, open industry association WiMedia™ Alliance announced the first silicon products certified on its Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Common Radio Platform. WiMedia members Alereon, Inc., Artimi, Inc., Intel Corporation, Realtek Semiconductor Corporation, Staccato Communications, Tzero Technologies, WiQuest Communications and Wisair have successfully completed both phases of the Alliance's compliance and interoperability testing for 12 different platforms. Silicon certified on the WiMedia platform provides the foundation for a number of high-speed wireless protocols, including next generation Bluetooth and Wireless USB. Utilizing the WiMedia specifications, these applications provide low power consumption and data rates of up to 480 Mbps in the wireless personal area network (WPAN). Certification assures original equipment manufacturers that products will operate with minimal interference from other devices, enabling a positive user experience. This is expected to facilitate the introduction of WiMedia-based end-user products in personal computing, consumer electronics, and mobile devices. Read more

Scitopia.org Launches Updated Site

Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal created by leading science and technology scholarly societies removed its beta label on 16 October, marking the launch of its official service. Scitopia.org Beta was opened in June 2007, allowing users to test the site and provide feedback for improving the search portal. Since the initial beta release, scitopia.org has refined the cross-file searching that occurs with multiple content partners and modified the interface based on user feedback. The result is a simple and flexible interface, capable of providing reliable retrievals from over three million documents – primarily peer-reviewed journal content and conference proceedings –spanning more than 150 years of scholarship.

Scitopia.org is a product of the imagination and collaboration of 15 leading science and technology societies: Acoustical Society of America, American Geophysical Union; American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; American Institute of Physics; American Physical Society; American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Mechanical Engineers; AVS, ECS; IEEE; Institute of Physics Publishing; Optical Society of America; Society of Automotive Engineers; Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; and SPIE. IEEE Launches Internet Television
IEEE officially launched IEEE.tv on 27 September 2007. IEEE.tv is an Internet-based television network featuring targeted programming on technology and engineering produced by IEEE members. First launched as a beta site in August 2006, IEEE.tv includes programs available to the general public, along with special programming that can only be viewed by IEEE members. Improved features include a “flash” video format, a list of “most viewed” and “recently added” videos, and different options for RSS feeds, enabling Internet syndication. Additional features, available only to IEEE members, include downloadable videos and personalization options.

In 2007, IEEE appointed the IEEE.tv Advisory Group to provide strategic oversight and guidance for product development. The Group includes:

  • Charles Dages, Executive Vice President, Emerging Technology, Warner Bros.
  • David Green, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham); IEEE Treasurer
  • Tom Gurley, Independent Broadcasting Consultant; Past-President IEEE Broadcast Technology Society
  • William Hayes, Director of Engineering and Technology, Iowa Public Television; President, IEEE Broadcast Technology Society
  • Cecelia Jankowski, Managing Director, IEEE Regional Activities
  • Lisa Lazareck, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Oxford, United Kingdom; IEEE GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) volunteer, Co-host of Discovery Channel program Zapped

2008 Expected to be Big Year for Mobile Phone Innovation
According to analyst Bernhard Warner, the mobile telecommunications sector will continue to see improvements in 2007, though the real technological breakthroughs are expected to occur in mid-2008 and beyond. Warner’s recent visit to South Korea, meeting with handset makers LG Electronics, Samsung, and others, resulted in a “products to watch” list. This year and early into next, watch for mobile TV phones with improved picture quality; “serious” camera phones (with more focus on the digital camera than the phone); more touch-screen phones with increased memory to become all-in-one PDA organizers; HSUPA phones, allowing users to publish sizeable files to the net (for true on-the-go publishing capabilities for bloggers); and phones with a built-in RFID reader, turning handsets into scanners. The latter was demonstrated by SK Telecom in Seoul – its customers can wave their phones along the door of a taxi cab to get details on the driver’s safety record before getting in. During the later part of 2008, consumers can look for mobile phones doubling as digital wallets by using reader chips to pay for drinks from specially equipped vending machines or take money out of cash machines with just a swipe, and a few personal details. New RF-test System Debuted by Keithley Instruments
The research, development and production testing of next-generation RF-communications equipment and devices is now addressed with Keithley Instruments’ release of its 4×4 (four-transmitter-, four-receiver-per-sector) MIMO (multiple-input/multiple-output) RF-test system. The system includes the manufacturer’s new Model 2920 VSG (vector-signal generator), Model 2820 VSA (vector-signal analyzer), Model 2895 MIMO-synchronization unit, and Model 280111 MIMO signal-analysis software. According to Keithley, this is the first MIMO-test system to support 4×4-MIMO applications and commercial standards like cellular, WiMax, and WLAN. The devices also feature ±1-nsec signal-sampler synchronization, less-than-1-nsec peak-to-peak signal-sampler jitter, and less than 1° of peak-to-peak RF-carrier phase jitter. Because these specifications permit tight multiunit synchronization, the new system supports MIMO measurements on 40-MHz IEEE 802.11n WLAN MIMO – often considered the industry’s most demanding signal. Robots, RFID to Improve Luggage Handling
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, with the help of IBM and Vanderlande Industries, is planning to use baggage-handling robots to reduce the amount of lost luggage – and increase passenger satisfaction. IBM will provide a baggage management system, related services and hardware to control and track each bag using robot handling software and radio frequency identification (RFID). With six robots handling 60% of baggage loading, the new system is expected to reduce operating costs for the airport and transfer connection times for passengers. The system is also expected to improve working conditions for those currently handling bags. Read more
