Call for Papers: 2008 IEEE International Conference on RFID
The IEEE International Conference on RFID (IEEE RFID), scheduled for 16-17 April 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, is one of the leading international technical conferences. IEEE RFID will bring together leading researchers, developers, integrators, and visionaries to discuss and expand their knowledge of technologies, systems, networks, algorithms, and applications that support the development and adoption of RF-based wireless communications and identification systems. Papers presenting new research, innovations, and implementations related to the theory and practice of RFID systems, sensor technologies, and related information system support are requested. All submissions should describe original work not previously published or currently under review for publication in another conference or journal and must be submitted by 19 December 2007. Samsung Smartphone Beats iPhone to Market in Korea
Samsung has leapfrogged Apple’s iPhone in reaching the Korean market with the launch of its mobile M4650 Multi-touch phone with full Internet browsing, sold through LG Telecom. The handset’s 2.8-inch LCD screen, smaller than iPhone’s 3.5-inch display, doubles as a keypad and is used with a stylus. The phone can also play terrestrial DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) TV broadcasting which is expected to add to its appeal in Korea where, at least prior to the iPhone’s success elsewhere, a well-established broadband Internet network has made consumers less likely to buy larger phones with Internet options. The M4650’s price at its initial launch was 500,000 won (approximately US$537). Read more

Scientific Tools Instrumental in Creating New Jobs
While reports of layoffs across several segments of the technology sector have caused enrollment in some university engineering and computer science programs to drop, one area where a thriving market is creating new jobs for highly skilled engineers is the development and manufacturing of scientific instruments. Companies making a wide range of scientific instruments for police, forensic science laboratories, and intelligence services are looking for qualified mechanical, electrical, and process-based engineers. Engineers with commercial skills, and those who can communicate well with customers, are also in high demand. Read more

Manufacturers Claim Success in Initial LTE Tests
A consortium of telecom manufacturers and network operators have recently announced that initial laboratory and field tests of a next-generation wireless technology, called Long Term Evolution (LTE), have been successful. The new technology is expected to “deliver high levels of data throughput for both stationary and mobile devices”. Many wireless carriers believe LTE could leapfrog over WiMax, becoming the mobile broadband technology of choice for delivering data and video to handsets. The initial tests for the new technology used prototype single and multi-antenna radio systems. Additional tests for LTE are expected to look at the medium access control (MAC) layer, which deals with how packets are transported over the air; the ability to simultaneously receive and transmit data; radio resource management; and how the technology works in a mobile environment. Open Platform for Cell Phone Software Introduced
Google recently announced free operating software for cell phones in a move to increase ad sales through greater mobile Internet use. The new software, called “Android”, launches in 2008 with 33 wireless carriers, handset makers, and software developers on board, including Nokia, Motorola, and Deutsche Telekon’s DK T-Mobile. Google’s partnerships with sites for ad revenue, such as Time Warner’s AOL and InterActiveCorp’s Ask.com, will extend to the mobile arena — where sales of search-based text ads are forecast by eMarketer to grow from US$2.1 million (2006) to US$713.7 million (2011). Google shares hit a closing high of US$725.65 on the announcement, although some expected news on a long-rumored mobile “Gphone”. Success with Android might give Google less impetus to build its own mobile device. RF Code Honored as Winner of RFID Product Line Award
A leader in enterprise-class active RFID technology, RF Code, Inc. recently announced that Frost & Sullivan, a global consulting firm, has presented the company with its 2007 Active RFID Product Line Leadership Award. The Leadership award is given each year to the company that has demonstrated the most insight into customer needs and product demands. To select the Award recipient, Frost & Sullivan tracks all end-user requirements and market dynamics within the industry and conducts interviews with suppliers, end-users, and industry experts. RF Code’s product line is typically used to locate, track, and monitor assets in IT, healthcare, pharmaceutical, financials, and defense-related markets. Read more

Test Tools Support Growth of Mobile WiMax
With the equipment market for Mobile WiMax expected to reach US$2.53 billion by 2012 and a WiMax Forum certification program requirement that end-user mobile stations and base stations undergo conformance testing to ensure interoperability with devices from different vendors, demand is growing for tools that manufacturers can use for WiMax testing. Commonly performed WiMax tests include DUT (device under test) RX/TX testing, sensitivity, strong signal level, adjacent and alternate adjacent channel rejection, output power, subcarrier flatness, RCE, carrier feedthrough, frequency offset, and spectrum mask. Additional MIMO testing includes port isolation, cross correlation and channel condition number. Read more

All-Wireless Workplace Now Open for Business
Aruba Networks and distribution partner Avnet Technology Solutions are introducing a new unified mobility solution for the deployment of a highly secure, all-wireless workplace. In seminars around the U.S., the two companies are explaining how Aruba’s new 802.11n networks and 80Gbps Mobility Controller can be used in conjunction with complementary server, storage, and networking products distributed by Avnet. The resulting all-wireless workplace offers higher security, more flexible deployment options, and better performance than typical 100BaseT wired networks. Read more

New System Uses RFID for Internet-Enabled Document Management
Docuspace partner Intensecomp has released its new online document management system, DocuTrack3000 - Hosted Edition. The new release combines the management of electronic and hard copies of files with a single, web-browser based electronic document management system. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used to monitor the movement and location of documents by plugging an RFID reader into any internet-enabled computer, allowing tagged documents to be checked in or out of the system from anywhere. DocuTrack3000 includes document access and version controls and a range of other document-sharing and security features. Read more

IEEE Transactions on Robotics is Top-Rated Robotics Journal in Re-Issued 2006 Journal Citation Reports
IEEE Transactions on Robotics (T-RO) is the top ranking journal in the robotics category in the 2006 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with an impact factor of 1.763, the highest in this category. The impact factor is a calculated figure indicating the average number of times articles published in the previous two years are cited in the current year.

When the JCR was originally published in June, T-RO appeared to have slipped to third place in this category. After the data was analyzed by Editor-in-Chief Alessandro De Luca, it was determined that a number of 2006 citations were missing. The JCR publisher, Thomson Scientific, confirmed the error and corrected it in the recently re-issued version of the 2006 JCR. JCR includes data for nearly 6,200 highly cited titles in a wide variety of disciplines.

The IEEE Transactions on Robotics has ranked number one in the Robotics category for several years and specifically for the five year period 2002 - 2006.
