RF-Signal Analysis and Generation Added to Communications Software
The Keithley Instruments free SignalMeister software platform is now expanded to include RF-signal analysis and generation, controlling both SISO (single-input/single-output) and MIMO (multiple-input/multiple-output) signals in the same environment within the same block-diagram-based graphical user interface. The latest wireless MIMO protocol standards—WiMax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) Wave 2 and 802.11n WLAN (wireless local-area network)—are supported.  It also provides such complex functions as WLAN-channel modeling, beam forming, simulation studies, IQ (in-phase/quadrature) operations, and full utilities for data import and export. Software Defined Radios Slated to Become Standard for Wireless Connectivity
Smart or full feature phones are expected to see the largest growth in high value applications, according to wireless industry experts who say software programmable radio frequency modules could become the standard for all wireless phone devices. While the ability to download and stream videos, browse the Internet, and use a global positioning device are common features in advanced mobile phones, it has been problematic for engineers and manufacturers to meet consumer demand and adhere to the massive growth of wireless protocols. Therefore, low-power, reduced cost, software-defined radios are being touted by some as the solution for meeting the new technological demands presented by smart phones. Read more

Social Networks Set to Change Landscape of Web Portals
Due to their functionality and increasing range of services, large social networking systems such as Facebook and MySpace are presenting threats to the dominant Internet portals which have traditionally generated the most Web traffic and advertising revenue. According to a BusinessWeek article, Facebook’s partnership with Amazon.com has allowed the social networking group to provide users with one-stop shopping services without leaving the Facebook site. By providing mobile services to wireless users and high resolution video formats, Facebook is one example of how social networking sites have grown into powerful portals to the Internet. Read more

Can You Get a Decent Raise in a Recession?
Dozens of companies are in the red and you may personally know more than a handful of people who have been laid off. But a Computer World article notes that it is still not impossible to get more than a token raise this year, despite the global economic downturn. If you are a top-notch performer and are able to make a strong case by putting your accomplishments--like saving the company money or bringing in heaps of revenue--on paper, asking for more money is not out of the question. "They have fewer people, higher costs and thinner margins, so bosses are really appreciative of people who can step up and contribute," says Jack Chapman, a salary coach in Chicago. Just make sure that you research your company's financial position so you don't ask for more than is reasonable under the circumstances. Read more
