Deadline Extended for IEEE Wireless Communications Certification Exam Applications
The IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc) has extended the registration deadline for the upcoming IEEE Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification exam to 28 February 2008. The exam window will be open 16 March - 4 April 2009.

Launched in 2008 by IEEE ComSoc and an international collection of industry experts, the IEEE WCET Program provides eligible candidates with a quantifiable method for demonstrating their expertise of wireless communications to employers based throughout the world. It also offers global employers with a certifiable means for gauging wireless professional qualifications.

For more information about the program visit the WCET Web site

First Thermo-Fueled Wireless Sensor System Debuts
The globe’s first thermo-fueled wireless sensor system, the TE-Power NODE, has been unveiled for commercial use by Micropelt GmbH, a Germany-based company that produces thin film thermoelectrics. Micropelt’s embedded chip thermogenerator captures several degrees of temperature differential and gathers that thermal energy to conduct the wireless sensor node, allowing for unlimited battery-free use. In order to work the wireless sensor node, the device needs to be joined to an appropriate heat source. After several seconds, the TE-Power Node starts sending data to a personal computer through Texas Instrument’s standard receiver module. Once the data is displayed on the computer screen, users can determine the quality and coherence of the thermal power supply. Read more

Report Reveals Telecommunication Industry Forecasts
A market research report from Business Wire, based in New York (USA), provides recent reporting, insight and analysis of the telecommunications industry and attempts to shed light on forecast growth. Major topics of the report include analysis of the USA’s performance in global broadband development and rising trends in the voice, broadband and digital TV sectors. According to the report, wireless subscriber growth is expected to decline during 2009 as market penetration goes further than 90 percent. The importance of the wireless sector, however, will endure and grow stronger with roughly 15 percent of households becoming solely wireless entities by early 2009. Read more

Wireless Carriers Plan for 4G Inclusion to Their Networks
Teaser hereAlthough the technology for fourth-generation (4G) wireless devices is neither available, nor completely defined, wireless controllers are preparing their networks for inclusion and installation of these changes. One key component in the preparation for 4G technology use is creating an infrastructure that will allow for the devices to co-exist with 3G technology. To achieve this objective, some companies are enhancing their main networks to manipulate both the 3G Long Term Evolution technology and 4G devices. As networks change, large increases are expected to take place in throughput and signaling, but co-existence is expected to ensure that the technologies work together. Read more

Qualcomm Plans to Develop Chipset That Enhances Voice and 3G Data Reception
Qualcomm announced that it has placed femtocell chipsets in its line of products, allowing for the possibility of creating mainstream availability of femtocells, which are technologies that act as tiny cell phone towers. The end result would enhance voice and third generation data reception for businesses and homes, which often suffers due to a lack of cell phone reception. Additionally, the technology would have incorporated radio frequency capacities for all the large wireless bands. Read more

Plans to Create World’s Quickest Wireless Broadband Network Revealed
Telstra Corporation plans to increase the maximum speed of their wireless broadband network between now and April. Beginning 23 February, Telstra will upgrade the speed of its next generation mobile network from 14.4 to 21 megabits per second for its business customers and for its regular customers by April. By the end of 2009 and early 2010, Telstra plans to push the speed up to 42 megabits per second, with Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo calling it the fastest wireless broadband available. Read more

Contract Positions Inflate Job Opening Numbers
Are tech jobs available or not? It depends on what you mean. Dice.com is reporting that the overall number of tech job listings on its site has shown its first uptick since last summer, after the jobs site lost close to 40,000 ads over the course of 2008. But the number of openings for permanent jobs with benefits continues to fall, while more contractor positions are available. Listings for contractors currently make up nearly 42 percent of its tech industry openings, with that number expected to reach 50 percent of the total sometime this year. Job market analysts say that employers are also demanding more in the way of skills while placing strict stipulations on pay and the length of contracts. Read more
