IEEE Senior Membership
IEEE Senior Membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior Membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

About the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society Newsletter
Engineers today start their careers with excellent technical skills and subject matter expertise. The IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement (I&M) Newsletter includes time sensitive news useful to its members and highlights content of the current issue of IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine.

As the end of the year approaches I look back on it happily. As President of the Instrumentation and Measurement Society, I was privileged to meet many of you in my travels. In addition to the required six trips for IEEE and I&M AdCom meetings, I attended I2MTC in Houston and MeMeA in Rome. I visited Zagreb and Dubrovnik in preparation for I2MTC2020. I visited Ottawa as a guest of the local section. It's a busy travel schedule, but it was worth it.

What I liked most about these places was the opportunity to visit people: Members, professional associates, business people we work with as a Society. I particularly enjoy my conversations with students and young professionals as they are the future of our Society. I do my best to represent the values of the IEEE I&M and the value we can provide them.

Recently, we have gotten our IEEE Resource Center operational and through it we offer excellent video tutorials about everything from the basics of measurement to hot topics. We provide an electronic version of our Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine through the Resource center as well. Of course, if you are a member you receive the magazine free. I encourage you to visit our website for more information about value we provide through publications, conferences, and technical committees.

When I consider the number of people I have met who are involved in local chapters and the number of people who are already actively involved with our AdCom, publications, and technical committees, I am astonished! Our Society is a relatively small one with just about 3800 members worldwide, but there are hundreds of active volunteers. The spirit of leadership in our Society is wonderful. Please consider letting us know your leadership interests. You can contact me by email at I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you at future events around the world. Seek me out at I2MTC2019, Auckland, NZ in May. I'll be pleased to chat with you about your involvement in our Society.

J. Max Cortner
President of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society 2018-2019

Our mission statement reads, "The Instrumentation & Measurement Society Administrative Committee strives to provide the most comprehensive and high-quality services to our members and related professionals." The I&M Society has a wide range of activities and benefits to offer our members. These are detailed on our website highlighting the available services and products.

There also are many opportunities for our members to become involved in volunteer leadership positions that help promote the instrumentation and measurement profession. We invite you to become involved today!

IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society welcomes nominations to IEEE Fellow elevation.

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved to recognize IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Indeed, the total number of new IEEE Fellows selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting IEEE membership.

To be eligible for IEEE Fellow elevation, a nominee must be an IEEE Senior Member or an IEEE Life Member, and to have been a member in good standing in any grade for a period of at least five years preceding January 1st of the year of elevation.

IEEE Fellow nominees are classified into the following four categories:
  • Application Engineer/Practitioner
  • Educator
  • Research Engineer/Scientist
  • Technical Leader
The nominator can be any person, including non-IEEE members. The nominator has the responsibility to:
  1. Prepare the IEEE Fellow Grade Nomination Form
  2. Solicit at least five, but no more than eight, IEEE Fellow references capable of assessing the nominee's contributions
  3. Solicit no more than three endorsements capable of supporting the nomination. Any person, including non-IEEE members, may submit an endorsement
  4. Identify an IEEE Society/Technical Council whose evaluating committee will assess the nominee's technical qualifications and contributions
The next deadline for submitting IEEE Fellow nominations is 1 March 2019 (hard deadline, no extensions).

Further information about the IEEE Fellow program is available by clicking here.

2019 IEEE International Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC 2019) will be hosting a series of tutorials in the area of instrumentation and measurement, and proposals are invited from the industrial and research community.

We encourage proposals for tutorials dealing with emerging technologies, specialized measurement techniques and applications, and refresher or introductory material of fundamental importance to all instrumentation and measurement professionals.

Both lecture and hands-on style tutorials are considered. Presentations are in English and should properly cite material sources.

It is particularly important that a tutorial's technology and presentation be objective, of a high standard, and free of salesmanship, marketing, or other promotional content.

The Call for Tutorials, Tutorial Proposal Format, and EDAS submission information can be found here.

Deadline for tutorial proposals: 14 December 2018

For more information, contact the Tutorial Chairs: Octavia A. Dobre and Eric Matson

The I&M Society is currently seeking nominations for the 2018 Outstanding Technical Committee Award. Nominations are due by 31 December 2018. To submit your nomination for the 2018 I&M Society Outstanding Technical Committee, click here: Nomination Form

Spotlight on Publishing & an Opportunity to help Advertise your Research:

Authors of all published or e-published papers during 2018 in the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIM) are welcome to present their TIM paper at I2MTC 2019 in the Special Poster Session "I&M Transaction papers @ I2MTC." This is an excellent opportunity to advertise your research! I2MTC 2018 in Houston was our first time to offer this, and it was a big success. Looking forward, and differing from I2MTC 2018, we have removed the restriction of not including CPEM and I2MTC Special Issue papers. Authors who would like to take advantage of this opportunity will have to register their poster via EDAS. No review is required for the poster, and normal registration rules apply. Deadline to submit: 29 March 2019, 23:59 EST. Please go to, then navigate to the I2MTC 2019 conference page, and see the TIM@I2MTC item under the "Authors" menu for more details. See you at I2MTC 2019 in Auckland!

Dear Students of Instrumentation and Measurement,

We would like to recognize our Graduate Representative Andrea Angioni for all his hard work for the Society. Andrea has held a vital role in generating student activities, helping address many topics that affect graduate students, and so much more. With Andrea having filled his maximum time as Graduate Student Representative, there was a new election at the most recent Administrative Committee meeting, and we'd like to formally congratulation to Katelyn Brinker for being elected as the 2019 Graduate Student Representative!

The student sensors competition also serves as a way to gain valuable experience within the sensors field, as well as gain a possible way to secure future funding. More information about the competition is available on the society website here. Please be aware of the fast approaching deadlines for entering.

Thank you all for a wonderful 2018 - we cannot wait to see what great things will happen in 2019!

Michael Nacy
