Welcome Message from I&M Society President

Dear IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society Members:

The IEEE I&M Society is closely monitoring developments related to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic.

The health and safety of our volunteers is the number one priority of our Society. The IMS Executive Committee is working diligently with IEEE to define a course of action that will take local regulations into consideration while ensuring that the hard work of our conference organizers and authors is not minimized by the impact of this pandemic.

We want to keep all of you informed as best as possible. Please continue to check our website for updates about upcoming conferences and events.

Wishing you the very best,

Salvo Baglio
President of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society

Benefit of I&M Membership

I&M Membership News
Report from IMS WIE Liaison Ferdinanda Ponci

On 22 May 2021 the IMS AdCom has agreed to take the WIE Pledge on diversity in IEEE Conferences and events. This Pledge formalizes a practice that the IMS has long followed, starting from the AdCom candidates, members and Officers, and also extended to editorial boards and events.

Years of such practice result in a portion of female AdCom members (exceeding 1/3) that exceeds significantly that of the IMS membership. Two out of three Plenary speakers are female at I2MTC 2021, the major conference of IMS. THE IMS LEADS THE WAY IN DIVERSITY!

Student Chapter Activity Idea

Hold a collaborative event, such as a game night social, with your IEEE Student Branch and invite students in your department. This is a great way to expose new people to your chapter in an informal setting!

Introducing the IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurement

In keeping with the needs of our authors, including those who are obligated by their funding agencies to publish their research results as Open Access, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) is excited to announce the launch of the IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurement (IEEE OJIM), IMS’s Gold Open Access journal.

Submission Opens 1 September 2021

IEEE TIM is the Number 1 Journal in the Area of General Instrumentation and Measurement

TIM remains the number 1 journal in general instrumentation and measurement, with an Impact Factor of 4.016 compared to last year's 3.658. View TIM Metrics here.

TIM has been ranked number one in general instrumentation and measurement in terms of Google H-5 index! For more information on TIM, click here!

IEEE TIM Survey/Review papers
Do you want to get an up-to-date and comprehensive tutorial with in-depth analysis on a specific I&M topic? Then check out TIM's Survey/Review papers. These are references that can bring up to speed researchers, for example graduate students who want to start research in their thesis topic, relatively quickly and conveniently in one reading. Here is the list of all TIM Survey papers.
Attention Book Authors

Advertise your book on the IMS website! The Instrumentation and Measurement Society would like to provide a list of book titles written by IMS authors on the I&M website. The Society believes that books are an excellent avenue to disseminate the most advanced state-of-the art within and outside of the community and that the website will help to spread the good news about the hard work of the authors. The guidance below will govern which titles will be displayed. We look forward to your contributions! Visit our website for terms and guidelines.
I&M Education News
The Instrumentation and Measurement Society is working with IEEE Press and Wiley to develop book topics relevant to the Society through a liaison program. IMS members are invited to publish books relevant to instrumentation and/or measurement through this program, which does not affect the author's share of the book sale revenue. Interested individuals: Please contact either Professor Zheng Liu ( or Professor Octavia Dobre ( for details.
I&M Society Video Tutorial Program
The I&M Video Tutorials program offers two categories of 20-minute tutorials to I&M members: The Expert Series (24 available) and the Classroom Series (3 available). These tutorials are an excellent way to earn CEU/PDH credits!

Video Tutorials (VTs) of the Expert Series are authored by someone who is recognized as an expert (academician or practitioner) in his/her field, while a Classroom Series VT is one typically authored by a graduate student and may be geared more towards specific measurement or instrumentation skills and/or classroom-based lecture topics. If you are interested in being part of the Video Tutorial program, please contact Professor Salvatore Graziani, Editor-in-Chief of the Video Tutorials Program.
I&M Society Distinguished Lecturer Program
The Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) provides I&M chapters and technical events around the world with talks by experts on topics of interest and importance to the I&M community. Our lecturers are among the most qualified experts in their field. More details on the DLP can be found on our website.
The I&M Society continued the "IEEE IMS Virtual Distinguished Lecturer Webinar Series" in Q2 of 2021. This initiative allowed us to continue providing you with our respected and reputable Distinguished Lecturer program. Thank you to all who registered and participated in this lecture series!

If you missed any of the talks, recordings are available on our website!

For questions or concerns, please contact the DLP Chair, Kristen Donnell.
I&M Technical Committee News

Recognition of Technical Achievements and Innovations – Announcement of Issued Patents

We would like to recognize I&M Society members’ technical achievements and innovations that have resulted in issued patents during the current calendar year. If you have already been issued a patent in 2016, we wish to add it to the list. To do so please fill out the form here and we will add the information to the website. In addition, if you are issued a patent in the future, please use the same link to inform us and we will be happy to add it to the list as we intend to continuously update the information in this list.
Council News
The IEEE Systems Journal provides a systems-level, focused forum for application-oriented manuscripts that address complex systems and system-of-systems of national and global significance. It intends to encourage and facilitate cooperation and interaction among IEEE Societies with systems-level and systems engineering interest, and to attract non-IEEE contributors and readers from around the globe. For example, it publishes original contributions on how to deal with disaster response such as that triggered by hurricanes, tsunamis, or current volcanic eruptions that are not solvable by pure engineering solutions.

Click here for more details on the journal scope.

We invite you to consider this journal as one of the journals where your systems-oriented research results can be published.
I&M Conference News
The Instrumentation and Measurement Society’s flagship conference, I2MTC 2021 was held from 17-20 May 2021, and attracted a total of 445 attendees with 324 accepted papers presented from over 40 countries. Due to COVID-19, the conference was unable to take place as an on-site event at its originally scheduled location of Glasgow, Scotland. The conference was switched to a live virtual format with speakers presenting live on-line. The organizing committee used a combination of virtual platforms, CONFLux and to help attendees create a productive and interactive experience for technical sessions, live demos, tutorials, networking, panel discussions, and more.

We would like to thank the 2021 General Chairs, Deepak Uttamchandani, and Matthew Maynard, as well as the whole organizing committee for their dedication and hard work which led to a successful I2MTC 2021!

I2MTC plans to return as an on-site conference for 2022. We hope to see everyone in Ottawa, Canada from 16-19 May 2022!
