Overlength Page Charges Coming Into Effect
At its October 2017 meeting, the IAS Executive Board adopted a policy to impose an overlength charge on exceptionally long papers published in IEEE Industry Applications Magazine (M-IA) and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications (T-IA). Here are some details on how that practice will be implemented:
  • The target maximum length of papers published in M-IA and T-IA is nine pages.
  • For exceptionally long papers, a mandatory overlength charge will be determined at the time the page proof is approved for publication, and an invoice for that amount will be sent to the corresponding author.
  • The overlength charge will be calculated at the rate of US$120 per page for pages 11 and above of the final manuscript as formatted for publication M-IA and T-IA. Note that there will be a one-page margin between the target maximum length and the length at which the overlength charge will apply.
  • This overlength policy will apply to papers published in M-IA and T-IA beginning with the January/February 2019 issues. Authors should understand that papers submitted for review in 2018 and subsequently approved for publication may not actually be published until after this overlength policy takes effect.

University of Oviedo Joint Student Branch Chapter (UO-SBC) Meeting
Submitted by Cristina González Moral, UO-SBC Board member-community manager

The University of Oviedo IAS/IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS)/and IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter organized a conference with Professor Roberto Cárdenas, from the University of Chile on 1 February 2018. This was held in Gijon, Spain.

Roberto Cárdenas currently works as a Professor in the Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica in the University of Chile. He does research in electronic engineering and electrical engineering. His current research project is "Control Systems and Hardware Topologies for Modular Multilevel Converter Applications."

His conference was divided in two parts. In the first part he spoke about the educational system in Chile, how are studies classified, the Ph.D. program, financing, university rankings and more. This topic seems of high relevance to all Chapter members as it is important to understand the difference between our own system and others. This part was very dynamic, and people discussed the differences.

After this first speech we had a brief stop for coffee at the cafeteria. There, Director Juan Carlos Campo came to greet him and give him a small present on behalf of the University. Also pictured in this photo are Mr. Guirguis, Chapter chair and Prof. Marcos Alonso, Chapter advisor.

The second part of the speech was more technical, where he introduced us to four-wire microgrids, and spoke about his recent papers in this area. He also commented on the experimental areas they have at his university. Finally, the meeting was closed by a traditional Spanish lunch in the campus cafeteria, in order to give the students the chance to meet and interact with Prof. Cárdenas.

We would like to thank the school of engineering for giving us space which was perfect for our needs. In addition, we would like to thank everyone who attended, we hope that they found the activity as interesting as we did. Finally, we would like to thank Prof. Roberto Cárdenas for preparing such wonderful presentations and sharing his time with us.

This event was organized under the Supervision of the chapter advisor, Prof. Marcos Alonso, with the help of the chapter board members Mr. Guirguis Zaki Guirguis (SBC Chair), Mr. Jose Maria Cuartas (SBC Vice Chair), Ms. María Martínez (SBC treasurer), Ms. Maria Rodriguez (SBC Event Organizer) and Ms. Cristina González (SBC community manager).
