IEEE, IAS, PELS sponsored YP Event Meetup at the 2018 ECCE conference and IAS Annual Meeting in Portland, OR, USA. Over 200 students and young professionals met to network and share ideas with each other.

IAS is pleased to host free webinars for IAS members, starting in 2019 non-members will incur a fee to attend our webinars. A fee will also be collected from all attendees in 2019 for Certificates and Professional Development Hours (PDH) credits. The program will move to a new registration system in November, 2018.
APEC 2019 Sponsors Continue Student Travel Support Program
Travel support of up to US$1,000 is available to graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in power electronics programs to assist in attendance at APEC in March 2019. Up to US$60,000 in travel support will be distributed. The deadline for applications is 26 October 2018.

IEEE IAS 2018 Society Award Winners
2018 IEEE IAS Outstanding Achievement Award
Recipient: Dianguo Xu
Prof. Dianguo Xu received the Master and Doctor degree from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin, China, in 1984 and 1989, respectively, all in Electrical Engineering. In 1984, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology as an assistant professor. He later became a lecturer and associate professor in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Since 1994, he has been a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology. He was the Department Head from 1992 to 1998, Dean of School of Electrical Engineering and Automation from 1998 to 2010. Now he is the Vice President of HIT. Prof. Xu is the Vice President of China Electrotechnical Society (CES) and China Power Supply Society (CPSS). He is a Fellow of IEEE and Chair of IEEE Harbin Section, Associate Editors of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, and IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics.
Prof. Xu has been a member of International Steering Committee, IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems (PEDS); a member of Technical Program Committee, International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS); He is the technical program chair of IEEE VPPC2008 and IPEMC2012-ECCE Asia, general chair of ITEC AP 2017. Prof. Xu's research interests include ac motor drives, motion control, power converter based power system, appliance intelligent control, and lighting electronics.
Prof. Xu has authored and coauthored more than 600 technical papers and holds 78 patents.
2018 IEEE IAS Distinguished Service Award
Recipient: John P. Nelson
John Nelson received a BSEE from the University of Illinois in 1970 and an MSEE from the University of Colorado in 1975. After spending ten years as an electrical engineer for Public Service Company of Colorado, he became a consulting electrical power engineer, which he has done for the last 38 years. In 1984, Mr. Nelson founded NEI Electric Power Engineering and continues to provide electric power consulting services on an international basis for NEI.
In 1980, he began attending the IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee (PCIC) where in 1983 he was the Conference vice-chair for the Denver PCIC local conference committee and chair for the 1995 and 2005 Denver PCIC conferences. Mr. Nelson has been a member of the PCIC executive subcommittee since 1982 and rotated through the PCIC secretary, vice chair, chair and Advisory and Awards chair positions from 2006 through 2014. He has published over twenty IEEE/IAS/PCIC papers many of which were prize papers. Mr. Nelson was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 1997 and is presently an IEEE Life Fellow.
Mr. Nelson is the recipient of the 2015 Russell W. Mills award, the 2012 Richard Harold Kaufman Medal, the 2002 Denver IAS/PES Chapter Outstanding Engineer award and the 1975 Denver Post Honor award which was for service in the Colorado Army National Guard.
2018 IAS Andrew W. Smith Outstanding Young Member Achievement Award
Recipient: Dr. Pinjia Zhang
Prof. Pinjia Zhang received his bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing China in 2006, his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta Georgia in 2010, both in Electrical Engineering. From 2010 to 2015, he worked for GE Global Research, Niskayuna NY, as a Lead Research Engineer and program manager. Since 2015, he has been with Tsinghua University as an associate professor. Dr. Zhang primarily works on condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics of machines and drive systems. He has published over 70 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, and 25 patents issued and over 20 patents pending. Two of his papers are listed among the World Top 1% Most Cited Paper by Essential Science Indicators. He has won IEEE IAS or IEEE IES best paper award on two occasions. He is a Senior member of IEEE.
Prof. Zhang currently serves as the secretary of the IEEE IAS Beijing Chapter, having organized/co-organized over 40 seminars and lecturers. He led the establishment of the IAS student chapter at Tsinghua University in 2017, and has been working as the advisor since then. Dr. Zhang is currently serving as the associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications for both the Electric Machines Committee and the Industrial Drives Committee. He also serves on the award subcommittee and standard subcommittee for the Electric Machines Committee and the Industrial Drives Committee. He has been working in four IEEE standard workgroups.
2018 IAS Outstanding Young Member Service Award
Recipient: Richàrd Cselkó
Richàrd Cselkó completed his master degree in electric power engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He is currently an Assistant Lecturer and the Vice-head and Quality Manager of ISO accreditation of the High Voltage Laboratory at the same institution. His fields of interest include insulation diagnostic techniques, partial discharge measurements and statistics based maintenance planning applied to industrial power systems, electrical safety of linemen on high and medium voltage power lines and electrostatic processes. He is a member of several committees of the Hungarian Standards Association. He is the author of more than 40 publications. He was the supervisor of three IAS Graduate Thesis Contest awardees and the recipient of the Pro Progressio Foundation Best Supervisor Award.
He was the Founding Chair of the IEEE Budapest University of Technology and Economics Joint IAS/PES Student Branch Chapter where he currently serves as advisor. He was the founding member of the Hungary Section Young Professionals Affinity Group. He was the member of the organizing committee of the 2009 International Youth Conference on Energy, the first one in the series to be technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Industry Applications Society.
2018 Gerald Kliman Innovator Award
Recipient: Fei "Fred" Wang
Dr. Fei "Fred" Wang is a professor and Condra Chair of Excellence in Power Electronics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA. He is a founding member and serves as the Technical Director of the NSF-DOE Engineering Research Center CURRENT. He also holds a joint position in Oak Ridge National Lab. His experience also includes eight years as an associate professor and the Technical Director at the Center for Power Electronics Systems, Virginia Tech, and ten years as an engineer and R&D manager at General Electric. His research interests include WBG power electronics and power electronics applications in electrified transportation, renewable energy systems and electric grid. Dr. Wang is a Fellow of the IEEE and Fellow of U.S. National Academy of Inventors.
Call for Papers 2019 IEEE Industry Applications Annual Meeting
The 2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting will be held 29 September-3 October 2019 in Baltimore, MD, USA. It will address the technical interests related to industrial applications of electrical energy. Note that while the 2019 IAS Annual Meeting and the 2019 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) will be co-located in Baltimore, the technical programs at these conferences will be separate and will complement each other. Annual Meeting papers are solicited on subjects pertaining to the scope of the participating Technical Committees of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, as listed below. For papers, draft manuscripts (NOT abstracts or digests alone) should be submitted by email to the individuals identified below. Proposals for Tutorials (which may range from four hours to eight hours) should include a detailed outline as well as a list of presenters and their credentials.
The Tutorial Program is seeking proposals for presentations on topics in the general technical area of industrial applications of electrical energy, please send outlines and presenter details to: Dr. Joe Sottile by 1 May 2019 at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Metals Industry Committee is soliciting papers relating to making, shaping, or treating of metals. Drafts of proposed papers should be sent to Prof. Braz J. Cardoso Filho at email@example.com.
The Power Systems Engineering Committee is soliciting papers relating to electrical safety and to design, analysis, maintenance or monitoring of electrical generation or distribution systems in industrial, commercial or institutional facilities. The Industrial Lighting and Display Committee is soliciting papers relating to light sources and drivers, and display power supplies and more general in lighting system and display technology. The Industrial Automation and Control Committee is seeking papers that address the applications of electrical and electronic control devices, sensors, systems, and methods to the conversion, regulation and utilization of electricity for the control of industrial processes and manufacturing. The Electrostatic Processes Committee is seeking papers on topics related to fundamentals and industrial applications of electrostatics including but not limited to electrohydrodynamics, electrostatic measurements, computational electrostatics, electrostatic precipitation and separation, coronas and gas discharges, and ESD/EOS. The Power Systems Protection Committee is soliciting papers relating to the protection of power generation and distribution systems in industrial, commercial or institutional facilities, including both fault protection and surge protection. The Energy Systems Committee is soliciting papers related to distributed energy resources, energy management, system planning and related issues in industrial, commercial or institutional facilities. The Codes and Standards Committee is soliciting papers related to electrical codes and standards governing the electrical infrastructure in industrial or commercial facilities. The Mining Industry Committee is seeking papers related to electrical applications and operations in mines. Drafts of proposed papers should be sent to the Technical Committee Program Chair, Dr. David C Mazur at email@example.com.
The Working Group for Nuclear Applications is soliciting papers relating to Nuclear Technology and its applications (both power and non-power). Drafts of proposed papers should be sent to Ms. Julie Clark at US.Julie.Clark@ieee.org.
The Data Center Subcommittee is soliciting papers relating to best practices for data centers. The papers should focus on design, analysis, monitoring, maintenance, safety or operations of data centers. Drafts of full proposed papers should be sent to Tom Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
General Requirements: Authors must submit a draft of the proposed paper for evaluation by the sponsoring Technical Committee. Abstracts or digests alone will not be considered. One author must be designated as the corresponding author, and an email address must be provided for that person. All correspondence will be conducted via email. Authors are responsible for assuring that email sent to the corresponding author will NOT be blocked by a spam filter.
At least one author must register to attend the conference and pay the full conference registration fee prior to submitting each final manuscript. IEEE Student members, IEEE Life Members, and unemployed attendees must select a full conference registration to qualify to submit papers. Authors are limited to submitting no more than four manuscripts against each full registration. Papers in the main technical program will be archived in IEEE Xplore. Papers that are scheduled for presentation but not actually presented will not be archived in Xplore. Final manuscripts for the conference record will be submitted electronically via the IAS ScholarOne Manuscripts site. All papers will be scanned for plagiarism in CrossCheck. The submitting author must execute an IEEE Copyright Transfer at the time of manuscript submission.
All papers sponsored for presentation by the Power System Engineering Power System Protection, Energy Systems, Codes and Standards, and Metals Industry and Mining Industry Committees will be reviewed for possible publication in IEEE Transactions on Industry Application or IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, and authors will receive feedback from this review following the 2019 IAS Annual Meeting. Note that to satisfy IEEE requirements, authors may be required to revise their papers during the course of the review.
Authors of papers sponsored for presentation by the Industrial Automation and Control, Electrostatic Processes, and Industrial Lighting and Display Committees may request that revised versions of their paper(s) be reviewed for publication following presentation at the 2019 IAS Annual Meeting (AM).
Not all IAS Technical Committees hold sessions at the IAS Annual Meeting every year. If a committee is not listed in this call for papers, you should contact the appropriate IAS Technical Committee or Department Chair for more information. The 2019 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition will take place in Baltimore at the same time as the IAS Annual Meeting, and there may be additional opportunities to present papers at ECCE (paper submission deadlines may be different from AM).
Student Activities and Program: Students are encouraged to participate in the Annual Meeting and are welcome to submit papers for the Student Program being organized by the IAS Chapters and Membership Department. It is not necessary or expected that student presentations will be accompanied by formal manuscripts. Student papers are not included in the Annual Meeting Conference Record or archived in IEEE Xplore and are not eligible for publication in IEEE Transactions on Industry Application or IEEE Industry Applications Magazine.
