Volunteer Opportunities
IAS is seeking qualified volunteers to work on publications, committees, and conferences. Please submit an inquiry by filling out a volunteer application on the IAS website.

IEEE Senior Membership
IEEE Senior membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members for 2016.

IAS Distinguished Lecturer Program
The IAS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and Prominent Lecturer (PL) Program allows Chapters to invite experts to visit Chapter events and give lectures. It is a great opportunity to have direct contact with the best researchers and industrial experts in our field.

The DL and PL lecturers can be reimbursed by IAS US$1,000 and US$600 per lecture travel. The monetary support of travel invitations is limited to three lectures per year.

For more information, visit our website.

Join the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community

IAS is a sponsoring society of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community (TEC). The TEC coordinates broad and deep activities throughout IEEE in the growing electrification revolution across transportation domains, including advances in electric and hybrid cars, more-electric ships and aircraft, rail systems, personal transport, and the motive, storage, power grid, electronic intelligence, and control technologies that make them possible.

The Community delivers engagement through leadership opportunities, professional development, standards development, and other programming for practitioners, researchers, students, and all IEEE members interested in electric transportation.

It is free to join.

As a TEC member, you will enjoy a discount for some excellent online tutorials on machines, fuel cells, batteries, and other topics.

Did You Know?
"Did You Know" is a new column focused on benefits and inforamtion for IAS members. Each month we will offer a few facts about a different topic. Next month's topic will be Social Media.

IAS Members have access to online member benefits such as:
  • IEEE Industry Applications Magazine and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications are available electronically through IEEE Xplore.
  • Meeting Minutes for IAS ExecBoard Meetings are available online on the IAS website. You will need your IEEE Account information to view the meeting minutes.
  • IAS webinars and slide presentations are available to IAS members in the IAS Resource Center.

New Offering for IAS Members

In an effort to increase member benefits, IAS has created the IAS Resource Center. This Resource Center will house technical information such as webinars, slides and white papers. IAS members will be requested to sign in to access this information. Anyone that is not an active member of IAS will be charged a fee to access this information.

If there is information that you would like to see in the Resource Center, please send an email to

Myron Zucker Student-Faculty Grant Program
The Industry Application Society is soliciting interested parties to submit proposals to the Myron Zucker Student Faculty Grant Program. The deadline for application submission is 31 January 2017.

Adhering to Mr. Zucker's goal, the principal objectives of the Student-Faculty Grant Program are:
  • to interest students and faculty in industry applications of electrical engineering
  • to involve students and faculty in engineering problems related to the Scope of the IEEE Industry Applications Society
  • to provide financial assistance to students for their education
  • to provide seed money to allow faculty members to commence or expand teaching, research, or academic concentrations in industry applications of electrical engineering
In general, the Program functions much like a research support agency. It is administered by the IEEE Industry Applications Society through its Zucker Grant Committee with the consent of the IEEE Foundation.

The project must be designed to produce publishable results in one year (12 months). The preferred period of performance (for these 12 months) is 1 September through 31 August of the following year. The funding is such that approximately two grants, not exceeding US$25,000 each, can be awarded during each annual proposal cycle. This endowment is the programs only funding source; no other sources, including IEEE membership dues, are used.

Visit our website to view the program guidelines and the program application.

IAS Webinars
Our next webinar, "Design for Reliability in Power Electronic Systems" will be held 12 January 2017. Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology, Denmark will be the speaker.

To register for the webinar, please visit our website.

If you have any comments about the webinar program, or would like a particular topic addressed, please send an email to

Final papers will be published in IEEE Xplore.

Awareness & Prevention of Electric Accidents Video Available on
The Global Overhead Powerline Safety Awareness Project (OPSAP), funded by IAS, has reached the first milestone by producing a video. IEEE SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) will serve as its pilot in Hyderabad, India. SIGHT OPSAP-Hyderabad aims to reduce injuries and fatalities from overhead power lines. Satish Chaparala will manage the pilot with local support from the Hyderabad IEEE Section and the IAS/PES Chapter. The video can be found on the website; members are encouraged to watch the video and socialize the video within their Chapters and universities.
