Volunteer Opportunities
IAS is seeking qualified volunteers to work on publications, committee, and conferences. Please submit an inquiry by filling out a volunteer application on the IAS website.

IEEE Senior Membership
IEEE Senior Membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior Membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members for 2015.

Join the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community

IAS is a sponsoring society of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community (TEC). TEC coordinates broad and deep activities throughout the IEEE in the growing electrification revolution across transportation domains, including advances in electric and hybrid cars, more-electric ships and aircraft, rail systems, personal transport, and the motive, storage, power grid, electronic intelligence, and control technologies that make them possible.

The Community delivers engagement through leadership opportunities, professional development, standards development, and other programming for practitioners, researchers, students, and all IEEE members interested in electric transportation.

It is free to join.

As a TEC member, you will enjoy a discount for some excellent online tutorials on machines, fuel cells, batteries, and other topics.

IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification
The IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification (T-TE), first published in 2015, is now in full gear, accepting papers on any aspect of transportation electrification, including on-road, off-road, off-highway, and rail vehicles, airplanes, and ships.

IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award
In 1986, the IEEE Board of Directors created a Technical Field Award specifically recognizing important contributions in the field of Industrial Systems Engineering. This award was named the IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award, in honor of one of the most significant industrial system engineers in IEEE and AIEE history. Since that time, 29 people have been selected to receive the certificate, bronze medallion, and honorarium for their work. While IEEE membership is not a requirement to receive the Kaufmann award, all of the recipients so far have been IEEE members.

The Kaufmann Award selection committee is actively soliciting nominations for this award. The members of the committee cannot participate in the nomination process, but must instead rely on others to identify and nominate worthy individuals. The deadline for submission of nominations in 31 January 2016; the selection committee will evaluate the nominations and make a recommendation to the IEEE Board of Directors for action at its June 2016 meeting. The recipient(s) selected in 2016 will receive the award at an IEEE event of their choice in 2017.

The IEEE Technical Field Awards recognize distinguished accomplishments in specific areas of technology. Specifics on the award, as well as the nomination form, can be found on the Kaufmann award website.

While the nomination for the Kaufmann award is similar to a Fellow nomination in that the focus is on specific technical achievements of the nominee, the nomination itself is shorter and easier to complete. The nominator must identify a few individuals who will agree to write letters of endorsement that will accompany the nomination. The selection process is very competitive since there can be only one recipient (or team of up to three recipients) in each year, so it is prudent that the nomination be carefully prepared. Nominations that are not successful in one year may be resubmitted for consideration in subsequent years.

The Kaufmann Award is one of the opportunities you have to recognize colleagues within your field of technology. As leaders of your respective technical committees, I challenge you to identify one worthy individual within your technical community and between now and month-end, complete a nomination on behalf of your most worthy candidate for this prestigious IAS award. Thanks in advance for your support of this important Society initiative.
