Special Issue: Grid-Connected Power Electronics Systems: Stability, Power Quality, and Protection
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications
Call for papers deadline: 15 May 2017
Grid-connected power electronics systems have been increasingly found in Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) systems, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTSs), Variable-Speed Drives (VSDs), and other emerging energy-efficient applicants. The widespread adoption of power electronic apparatus in electrical grids brings more flexibility in power control and management, but encounters also a series of unprecedented challenges. The multitime-scale control dynamics of power electronics systems tend to induce oscillations or resonances across a wide frequency range. The limited over-current capability and the reduced rotational inertia of power converters are further deteriorating the system protection and transient stability. Numerous research efforts have thus been made towards these challenges, ranging from hardware concepts to converter/system modeling and control strategies.
This special issue is devoted to identify the technical barriers and the latest progresses in the utility applications of power electronics systems. Prospective authors are invited to submit innovative approaches, survey papers or tutorials, for review for publication in this special issue. View the call for papers.
Call for Nominations for Open TAB Positions with Various Deadlines
The Technical Activities Board (TAB) Nominations and Appointments Committee is accepting nominations for these open TAB positions that will be decided during the June IEEE OU Meetings:
You can also nominate yourself or a colleague for positions that will be determined during the November IEEE OU Meetings. The open positions include:

Global IEEE Volunteers Needed this Summer to Provide STEM Program to Youth
Do you want to raise the awareness and understanding of technology and its impact on society to middle and high school students from around the world? The IEEE emeritbadges STEM Project is a global pre-university technology education program for boys and girls. emeritbadges has developed a program to foster the accomplishment of its vision around the Electricity Merit Badge and the Electronics Merit Badge programs. A group of volunteers is needed to implement most of the project objectives at the 2017 National Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, WV, USA from 15-29 July 2017. The jamboree will be attended by thousands of boys and girls from around the world.
YOU are needed to staff the Electricity and Electronics Merit Badge booth in the STEM Quest area at the 2017 National Jamboree. Global volunteers are also needed to participate in train-the-trainer sessions to learn how to teach the basics of electricity and electronics to boys and girls in their local communities.
Contact Ralph W. Russell II at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer to spend a week or two in the scenic West Virginia mountains adjacent to the New River Gorge National River area to teach boys and girls the basics of electricity and electronics. We also need help with the planning and prep for the event.

Recent Activities in IAS-Manufacturing Systems Development and Applications Department (MSDAD)
by Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Chair MSDAD (2016-2017), Professor, Lakehead University, Canada
MSDAD is one of the four technical departments under IAS. MSDAD consists of a Chair and a Vice-Chair. Under MSDAD, there are three technical committees, Electrostatic Process Committee (EPC), Industrial Automation and Control Committee (IACC), and Industrial Lighting and Display Committee (ILDC). The MSDAD Vice-Chair is appointed after consultation among the three technical committees by the current MSDAD Chair. Generally, after two years of serving as a Vice-Chair, the MSDAD Vice-Chair is nominated for Chair position to be elected for two years by the IAS council vote. MSDAD Chair is a member of the IAS Executive Board. MSDAD Chair is the communication Channel between technical committees and the IAS Executive Board. MSDAD Chair collects the reports on quarterly basis from each technical committee Chair. Read the complete report.
