Volunteer Opportunities
IAS is seeking qualified volunteers to work on publications, committee, and conferences. Please submit an inquiry by filling out a volunteer application on the IAS website.
IEEE Senior Membership
IEEE Senior membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.
An application for Senior membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references. Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members for 2016. IAS Distinguished Lecturer Program
The IAS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and Prominent Lecturer (PL) Program allows Chapters to invite experts to visit Chapter events and give lectures. It is a great opportunity to have direct contact with the best researchers and industrial experts in our field.
The DL and PL lecturers can be reimbursed by US$1,000 and US$600 per lecture travel. The monetary support of travel invitations is limited to three lectures per year. For more information, visit our website. Join the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community
![]() IAS is a sponsoring society of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community (TEC). The TEC coordinates broad and deep activities throughout IEEE in the growing electrification revolution across transportation domains, including advances in electric and hybrid cars, more-electric ships and aircraft, rail systems, personal transport, and the motive, storage, power grid, electronic intelligence, and control technologies that make them possible. The Community delivers engagement through leadership opportunities, professional development, standards development, and other programming for practitioners, researchers, students, and all IEEE members interested in electric transportation. It is free to join. As a TEC member, you will enjoy a discount for some excellent online tutorials on machines, fuel cells, batteries, and other topics. |

He received the award "For contributions to the design and analysis of actuators, sensors, and motors for automotive applications." The patented work of Bruno Lequesne has driven advances leading to the realization of "more electric automobiles" that use electrical and electromechanical systems for improved fuel economy, reduced greenhouse emissions, and better safety. With innovations recognized by multiple awards from industry leaders such as Delphi and General Motors, Lequesne's work on linear actuators provided closed form solutions to identify the best configurations for engine-valve motion or suspension. His work on encoders for brushless motors helped overcome torque ripple in electric power steering systems, contributing to a fuel-saving feature now standard in most vehicles. His camshaft and crankshaft position sensors for engine control help to reduce emissions, and his wheel speed sensors for anti-skid braking have made vehicles safer. He also developed one of the first induction belt-driven starter generators, which has enabled start-stop functionality to help eliminate idling losses in engines. Luquesne, An IEEE Fellow, is president of E-Motors Consulting, LLC, Menomonee Falls, WI, USA The IEEE Nikola Tesla Award was established in 1975 through an agreement between the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the IEEE Board of Directors. The Award is named in honor of Nikola Tesla, an electrical engineer, a distinguished Yugoslav-American inventor, and a pioneer in many fields, who is most renowned for the development of the coil that bears his name and the a-c induction motor. Recipient selection is administered through the Technical Field Awards Council of the IEEE Awards Board. The sponsors of this award are Wolong Electric Group Co., Ltd., the IEEE Industry Applications Society, and the IEEE Power & Energy Society. ![]() New Offering for IAS Members ![]() In an effort to increase member benefits, IAS has created the IAS Resource Center. This Resource Center will house technical information such as webinars, slides and white papers. IAS members will be requested to login to access this information. Anyone that is not an active member of IAS will be charged a fee to access this information. If there is information that you would like to see in the Resource Center, please send an email to ias-administrator@ieee.org. ![]() Awareness & Prevention of Electric Accidents Video Available on IEEE.tv
The Global Overhead Powerline Safety Awareness Project, funded by IAS, has reached the first milestone by producing a video. IEEE SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) will serve as its pilot in Hyderabad, India. SIGHT OPSAP-Hyderabad aims to reduce injuries and fatalities from overhead power lines. Satish Chaparala will manage the pilot with local support from the Hyderabad IEEE Section and the IAS/PES Chapter. The video can be found on IEEE.tvs website, members are encouraged to watch the video and socialize the video within their chapters and universities.

On 5 August, the Technology Center of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, hosted an official ceremony to celebrate the inauguration of its first IEEE Chapters: the IAS-PELS-PES-IES Joint Chapter and the IAS Student Branch Chapter.
The opening ceremony happened with a filled auditorium and the presence of Mr. David Durocher, IAS President, and Mr. Pèter Magyar, IAS CMD Chair. In addition, the inauguration had the presence of the Technology Center Director Professor Luciano Schuch, along with other UFSM authorities. After the opening speeches, Mr. Durocher took the microphone for a brief presentation regarding the Industry Applications Society, followed by Mr. Magyar who gave an overview of worldwide IAS membership status. ![]() (IAS Chapters Opening Ceremony) The formation of the IEEE-UFSM Chapters was an initiative of Professor José Renes Pinheiro as a way to expand the activities of the UFSM beyond regional levels, by fomenting integration between academic research and worldwide industrial applications. As a way to engage students for this purpose, the IAS Student Branch Chapter was formed. Presided by Ms. Fernanda de Morais Carnielutti, it is the first IAS Student Chapter in Brazil. ![]() (From left, Mr. Durocher, Ms. Carnielutti, and Mr. Pinheiro, shaking hands) In the morning, Mr. Durocher and Mr. Magyar were led on a tour of the university campus and to visit research groups in the UFSM Electrical Engineering Graduate Program. Professors and students had the opportunity to share information with the IAS Executive Board members and discuss research projects being developed by the following groups: Power Electronics and Control Research Group, Power Systems and Energy Excellence Center, and Intelligence in Lighting. Seizing the opportunity of this event, in the afternoon, an official ceremony took place for the Institute of Smart Grids inauguration. INRI is a Research Center created to develop projects on Smart Grids and renewable energy sources, bringing together researchers, professors, students, and professionals from private sector companies. This ceremony was led by UFSM President Professor Paulo Afonso Burmann, and Vice-President Professor Paulo Bayard Dias Gonçalves. Many professors and students were present at the ceremony. The event was co-sponsored by the startup company Sonnen Energy, which was created by graduate students out of a research project in the UFSM Electrical Engineering Graduate Program. ![]() (Chapters plaque unveiling at INRI.
