IAS Supports STEM Activities at 2017 National Scout Jamboree
Boys and girls attending the 2017 National Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia this summer learned the basics of electricity and electronics from a group of 30 IEEE members (including four IAS Members) from Regions 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. The IEEE emeritbadges Project has sponsored the Electricity Merit Badge and the Electronics Merit Badge booths at all 10 National Jamborees since 1981 under the leadership of IEEE Region 3 Life Senior Member Ralph W. Russell, II. The project's goal is to provide a global STEM education program for boys and girls. Support in 2017 came from sixteen IEEE entities, including the IEEE Industry Applications Society, and non-IEEE groups such as BioLite, Lowe's, Microsoft and Minuteman Press. 134 boys and girls completed the requirements for the Electricity Merit Badge and 139 boys and girls completed the requirements for the Electronics Merit Badge. 2,853 people visited the booth during the Jamboree.

IAS funds were used to purchase Electricity and Electronics Merit Badge supplies and kits and to support the project's global outreach. The global outreach includes translation of the instructional material into several languages and a Train-the-Trainer webinar. The webinar will teach global IEEE volunteers how to use the project's instructional material in their local communities.

IAS Members Walter Hyde (Houston Section), Neeraj Bhatia (Houston Section), Julian Ajello (Oakland-East Bay Section) and Chris Nemarich (Baltimore Section) were instrumental in organizing the project and were volunteers at the 2017 National Jamboree.

Report from IEEE IAS Schenectady Section

By Xu She, IEEE IAS Schenectady Section Chair, GE Global Research.

Prof. Akshay Kumar Rathore, IEEE Senior Member, delivered distinguished lecture on Snubberless Naturally-Clamped Soft-Switching Bidirectional Current-Fed Converters, on June 30, 2017, invited by the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Schenectady Chapter in New York, USA. Prof. Rathore pointed out that current-fed power electronic systems have been demonstrated and justified for high voltage gain and high current applications. Current-fed power electronic circuits are boost derived converters and have been validated for high voltage gain and low voltage high current applications. Also, the inductor at the input of the converter provides natural short circuit protection. This inductor is reliable and offers longer lifetime (relatively reduced degradation) compared to electrolytic capacitor used in voltage-fed converters.

Special Issue: Emerging Topics in Lighting, 2018
IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE)
Scheduled Publication Date: September 2018

The drive for more efficient and smarter ways to use electrical energy is increasingly prevalent. Lighting, as the most common and naturally the most constant form of load, constitutes a significant portion of the total electricity consumption in all buildings. Therefore, it has a high energy-saving potential to optimize the lighting system, including both the lighting sources and their supply, towards better efficiency.

Currently, LED lamps are replacing traditional incandescent lamps due to advantages in efficiency, life span and fast response. With the development of LED packing and coating technology, the cost of the LEDs will be further decreased and they will be more widely used in different applications. Besides, discharge lamps, like fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps and sodium vapor lamps are still being used in many applications owing to their several advantages. Both the LEDs and the discharge lamps require a current-regulating driving circuit, which is a critical factor influencing the efficiency of the lighting system and still calls for improvements.

Timeline:
  • September, 2017: Call for Papers to IEEE JESTPE Editorial Office
  • 31 December 2017: Manuscript Submission Deadline
  • 20 May 2018: Final Acceptance Notification
  • 1 June 2018: Manuscripts Forwarded to IEEE for Publication
  • 1 September 2018: Special Issue Appears in IEEE JESTPE

Special Issue: Grid-Connected Power Electronics Systems: Stability, Power Quality, and Protection
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications

Call for Papers Deadline: 15 October 2017

Grid-connected power electronics systems have been increasingly found in Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) systems, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTSs), Variable-Speed Drives (VSDs), and other emerging energy-efficient applicants. The widespread adoption of power electronic apparatus in electrical grids brings more flexibility in power control and management, but encounters also a series of unprecedented challenges. The multitime-scale control dynamics of power electronics systems tend to induce oscillations or resonances across a wide frequency range. The limited over-current capability and the reduced rotational inertia of power converters are further deteriorating the system protection and transient stability. Numerous research efforts have thus been made towards these challenges, ranging from hardware concepts to converter/system modeling and control strategies.

This special issue is devoted to identifying the technical barriers and the latest progress in the utility applications of power electronics systems. Prospective authors are invited to submit innovative approaches, survey papers or tutorials, for review for publication in this special issue. View the call for papers.
