Lensless Imaging via 400GHz TX/RX with Chip-to-Waveguide Transitions

A 400 GHz CMOS TX and RX chip incorporated two different chip-to-waveguide transitions: a coupled microstrip to waveguide coupler to a micromachined horn antenna for TX (EIRP 1.26 dBm), and a folded dipole in RX (effective 39 dB conversion gain, noise 45dB). Both chips combine in lensless active imaging with a 2mm spacial resolution.

Open Access

New Open Access MTT-S Journal to Launch in Q3

The IEEE Open Journal of the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society is one of 14 new open access IEEE journals announced on 11 June. The new gold (supported by charges to authors) journals will begin accepting submissions this fall for publication beginning in early 2020, joining IEEE Access and six other existing open-access publications.

David Tse Wins Hamming Medal

Work by IEEE Fellow David Ngar Ching Tse increased wireless-data-transmission channel capacity and decreased interference. The discoveries earned him the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal for the opportunistic scheduler, demonstrating that fading can be harnessed to increase network capacity, contributing to Qualcomm’s Evolution–Data Optimized telecommunications standard for high-data-rate wireless systems, the development of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and scaling laws.

A model for frequency-selective limiters envisions cascaded RLC parallel circuit units to describe spin-wave propagation inside magnetic materials. With added parameters to describe electromagnetic wave propagation, the model predicts power-dependent insertion loss as well as threshold power level, time delay, and frequency selectivity of the power limiting effect.
