Lensless Imaging via 400GHz TX/RX with Chip-to-Waveguide Transitions

A 400 GHz CMOS TX and RX chip incorporated two different chip-to-waveguide transitions: a coupled microstrip to waveguide coupler to a micromachined horn antenna for TX (EIRP 1.26 dBm), and a folded dipole in RX (effective 39 dB conversion gain, noise 45dB). Both chips combine in lensless active imaging with a 2mm spacial resolution.

New Open Access MTT-S Journal to Launch in Q3

The IEEE Open Journal of the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society is one of 14 new open access IEEE journals announced on 11 June. The new gold (supported by charges to authors) journals will begin accepting submissions this fall for publication beginning in early 2020, joining IEEE Access and six other existing open-access publications.

Hydration Monitoring using Microwaves

Existing techniques for monitoring human dehydration are inaccurate or inconvenient for long-term monitoring. Now, low-power measurements of of microwave (2-12 GHz) transmission through the forearm exploit the relationship between water content and tissue dielectric permittivity. Two papers from the University of Calgary lay out the theoretical models and then demonstrate feasibility through tests on athletes.

David Tse Wins Hamming Medal

Work by IEEE Fellow David Ngar Ching Tse increased wireless-data-transmission channel capacity and decreased interference. The discoveries earned him the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal for the opportunistic scheduler, demonstrating that fading can be harnessed to increase network capacity, contributing to Qualcomm’s Evolution–Data Optimized telecommunications standard for high-data-rate wireless systems, the development of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and scaling laws.

Anti-Reflection Coating for mmW and THz Applications

A simple process for depositing thick, dry, photoresist films (SUEX) for anti-reflection coatings on high-resistivity silicon wafers and lenses. Quarter-wavelength-thick coatings reduce reflection losses: a 150μm-thick SUEX layer conformally coated on a 1-cm-diameter high-resistivity silicon lens reduced reflection loss to less than 4% over the 220-325 GHz band.

A Model for Coupling Electromagnetic Waves to Spin Waves

A model for frequency-selective limiters envisions cascaded RLC parallel circuit units to describe spin-wave propagation inside magnetic materials. With added parameters to describe electromagnetic wave propagation, the model predicts power-dependent insertion loss as well as threshold power level, time delay, and frequency selectivity of the power limiting effect.

1 September is the deadline for entries in the MTT-Sat Challenge, a worldwide competition for teams of undergraduate and graduate students to design and build radio frequency and microwave hardware for small satellites. Selectivity Enhancement for Stepped-Impedance-Resonators Dual Passband Filters

A class of stepped-impedance resonator dual-band bandpass filter employs open-ended transmission-line segments interconnected at the input and added at input and output coupled-line stages. The device increases the order of each passband by two and generates transmission zeros on both sides of the transmission bands.
