3-D Printed Bandpass Filters with Split-Ring Resonators

Additive manufacturing let researchers make square split-ring resonators (SRRs) of finite height with significantly stronger coupling than thin printed structures. The printed SSRs produce filters with wider operational bandwidths in the same footprint, or the equivalent performance in a smaller envelope.

The first quantitative scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) of a live cell in physiological buffer overcame the challenge of probing soft matter in liquid by using multiscale finite-element full-wave EM simulation. The researchers measured cell permittivity at its nucleus at (32± 6)-j(20 ± 4).

A New Approach for Desert Reservoir Exploration: Terahertz Prospecting

An accurate, nondestructive, and economic oil-prospecting technique uses THz spectroscopy to detect trace organic matter migrating from underground petroleum reservoirs to surface sands. The method also detected long-chain alkanes, nitro-organics and aromatic compounds, confirmed by thermogravimetric and other standard analyses.
