It's Almost Here-IPCC 2012 in Orlando, Florida, October 8-10

In just a few weeks, the annual International Professional Communication Conference will begin on the campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando. At this year's conference, researchers, educators, students, and administrators in a variety of areas of engineering, professional, and technical communication will convene for three days of informative sessions and workshops. We also take time at the conference to recognize the achievements of our members (see more about Suguru Ishizaki, a 2012 award winner, below).

The preliminary program is now available. On behalf of IPCC 2012 Conference Chair George Hayhoe, I hope you will plan to attend!

Joenk Award Winner for Best Paper in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication

Suguru Ishizaki, associate professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, will receive the Rudolph J. Joenk, Jr. Award for Best Paper in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication at the IPCC 2012 in Orlando, Florida. Suguru's paper, entitled "Assessing Typographic Knowledge Using Time Tests," claims that researchers and instructors of technical and professional communication have embraced the importance of visual communication skills in recent years. But, little systematic effort has been made to develop assessment instruments that measure visual design skills. This paper presents a project that examines timed tests as a means of measuring a student's ability to solve typographic design problems. The process and rationale for the test designs and the results of a series of empirical studies are discussed. The results of the studies suggest that timed tests can be a viable complement to the project-oriented assessment approach.

Suguru will receive his award during the Awards Reception Tuesday, October 9. Congratulations Suguru!

Recognizing Achievement within PCS-Nominate Someone for a PCS Award!

Every year at IPCC, we recognize the work of our members in the fields of engineering communication, technical communication education, and service to the society. In preparation for IPCC 2013, we would like to invite PCS members to nominate individuals for the following Society awards:
  • The Alfred N. Goldsmith Award for Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Communication;
  • The Emily K. Schlesinger Award for Distinguished Service to the Professional Communication Society;
  • The Ronald S. Blicq Award for Distinction in Technical Communication Education;
More information about these awards, as well as a simple online nomination form, can be found on our Web site.

Have You Checked Out The New PCS Website?

The new PCS Web site is your online resource for information about PCS. Take a minute to read the President's Blog, a new feature that highlights a different dimension of communication every week, everything from using a semicolon correctly to crafting an effective apology.

We are interested in your feedback on the new site, so please let us know what you think!
