image of Stephanie White Greetings!

Our upcoming 2019 conferences are the 13th Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) which will be held 8-11 April 2019 at the Hyatt Grand Cypress in Orlando, FL, USA and the 5th International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE) will be held 1-3 October 2019 at the Principal Hotel George Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. The ISSE Call for Papers can be found on the conference website. The abstract and manuscript submission deadline for ISSE is 26 April 2019. I hope to see you at one or both of these conferences.

You also may be interested in submitting a paper to one of our two excellent Journals. We are very proud of our IEEE Systems Journal which provides a systems-level, focused forum for application-oriented manuscripts that address complex systems and system-of-systems of national and global significance. It has quite a high impact factor of 4.337. For additional information, visit the IEEE Systems Journal website. Our second journal, the IEEE Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space Systems (J-MASS) is a new technical journal devoted to covering the rapidly evolving field of small air and space systems such as drones and small satellites. These platforms offer new, low-cost ways to accomplish a wide range of sensing functions for applications ranging from agriculture to land use and ocean surveys. Please visit the J-MASS website for the range of topics.

If you are a student in the fields listed below or know an eligible student, please watch for the announcement of this year’s James O. Gray Scholarship on the Systems Council website. The scholarship recognizes graduate and undergraduate students pursuing studies in process control systems engineering, plant automation or instrumentation and measurement and undergraduate students pursuing studies in systems engineering. The prize is US$5,000 and a certificate for a Graduate student and US$5,000 and a certificate for an Undergraduate student. Funds will be paid to the school on behalf of the student.

Please visit our website frequently for conference announcements and other updates.

Our newsletters are published quarterly and include information on IEEE Systems Council activities plus a list of other conferences of interest. I hope you find this newsletter of interest. Past newsletters can be found on our website.

This is a follow-up and appeal to those who may be interested in joining the the Systems Education Technical Committee. The committee is in its formative stage and meant to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on systems topics including systems thinking, systems education, system dynamics and system engineering. We are seeking ideas and energy to make this committee a resource that could be valued by all.

Some things being considered include:
  • A Systems Council resource of systems thinking and systems research information available for all. This would include presentations, articles and other systems topics members could use to further the aims of the IEEE Systems Council and greater IEEE in general.
  • A forum (blog/wiki) for members to share ideas and resources for teaching and communicating systems subjects.
  • Databases to store and share systems education presentations and models.
  • Organizing/ sponsoring and conducting technical sessions during IEEE Systems Council conferences on systems topics.
  • Establish a Systems Council program to recognize system educators from K-12 to Graduate programs.
  • Develop a tutorial structure for live and virtual attendance on systems education topics.
  • Serve as a resource for organizations, public and private seeking information on systems thinking, education, modeling and engineering topics.
If you are interested in joining us to contribute to building this committee, please visit our website or send an email to Charles Pickar.
