1st Quarter 2019
About the IEEE Systems Council Newsletter
The IEEE Systems Council Newsletter includes time sensitive news useful to its members and highlights content of the current issue of the IEEE Systems Journal.
Our upcoming 2019 conferences are the 13th Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) which will be held 8-11 April 2019 at the Hyatt Grand Cypress in Orlando, FL, USA and the 5th International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE) will be held 1-3 October 2019 at the Principal Hotel George Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. The ISSE Call for Papers can be found on the conference website. The abstract and manuscript submission deadline for ISSE is 26 April 2019. I hope to see you at one or both of these conferences.
You also may be interested in submitting a paper to one of our two excellent Journals. We are very proud of our IEEE Systems Journal which provides a systems-level, focused forum for application-oriented manuscripts that address complex systems and system-of-systems of national and global significance. It has quite a high impact factor of 4.337. For additional information, visit the IEEE Systems Journal website. Our second journal, the IEEE Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space Systems (J-MASS) is a new technical journal devoted to covering the rapidly evolving field of small air and space systems such as drones and small satellites. These platforms offer new, low-cost ways to accomplish a wide range of sensing functions for applications ranging from agriculture to land use and ocean surveys. Please visit the J-MASS website for the range of topics.
If you are a student in the fields listed below or know an eligible student, please watch for the announcement of this year’s James O. Gray Scholarship on the Systems Council website. The scholarship recognizes graduate and undergraduate students pursuing studies in process control systems engineering, plant automation or instrumentation and measurement and undergraduate students pursuing studies in systems engineering. The prize is US$5,000 and a certificate for a Graduate student and US$5,000 and a certificate for an Undergraduate student. Funds will be paid to the school on behalf of the student.
Please visit our website frequently for conference announcements and other updates.
Our newsletters are published quarterly and include information on IEEE Systems Council activities plus a list of other conferences of interest. I hope you find this newsletter of interest. Past newsletters can be found on our website.

Introducing a new conference for 2020: IEEE Systems Security Symposium
We are pleased to announce that we are initiating a new IEEE Systems Security Symposium, with INCOSE and the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), to debut in March 2020.
The IEEE-NDIA-INCOSE Systems Security Symposium seeks research papers and application studies which focus on the development of secure, safe, and resilient systems. This symposium attempts to address the convergence of cybersecurity and engineering with interest in the effective application of security principles, methods, and tools to complex systems such as cyber-physical systems, autonomous systems, IoT devices, transportation systems, medical devices, and other systems of interest.

Each quarter the IEEE Systems Council will feature a number of our member Societies in the Member Society Spotlight. The full list of our member Societies can be found on our website. This quarter we are focusing on IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS)
The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society objectives are scientific, literary and educational in character. The Society strives for the advancement of the theory and practice of robotics and automation engineering and science and of the allied arts and sciences, and for the maintenance of high professional standards among its members, all in consonance with the Constitution and Bylaws of the IEEE and with special attention to such aims within the field of interest of the Society.
Their Mission is to foster the development and facilitate the exchange of scientific and technological knowledge in robotics and automation that benefits members, the profession and humanity.
Their Vision is to be the most recognized and respected global organization in robotics and automation.

Call for Papers for IEEE Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space Systems (J-MASS)
Original manuscripts are being solicited for the IEEE Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space Systems. The scope of the journal includes the many key subsystems and applications for the rapidly expanding technologies associated with drones, nano-sats, and similar systems. General information about the journal can be found on our website. Authors should submit their manuscripts through Manuscript Central. Please contact John Schmalzel for any additional information.
This is a follow-up and appeal to those who may be interested in joining the the Systems Education Technical Committee. The committee is in its formative stage and meant to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on systems topics including systems thinking, systems education, system dynamics and system engineering. We are seeking ideas and energy to make this committee a resource that could be valued by all.
