In Memory of Patrick (Pat) Ryan
PES Executive Director

The IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES), a sister Society of IAS recently lost a great friend and strong supporter of IEEE, PES and IAS. Pat Ryan was the Executive Director of the Power and Energy Society. Pat worked very closely with IAS Executive Director, Patrick McCarren and IAS Program Specialist, Lynda Bernstein on co-sponsored conferences (like PowerAfrica) and programs; IEEE Smart Village, Smart Grid and Smart Cities. In fact, Lynda began her IEEE career working for PES under Pat.

Pat began his career with IEEE under the PES leadership of John McDonald, the 2006-2007 PES President. Pat worked very closely with Robin Podmore and Ray Larsen, the two co-founders of ISV. At the two-day IEEE Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) conference in October 2009 in Washington, D.C., Robin met Ray and the idea for IEEE Smart Village (initially called Community Solutions Initiatives) was born.

The Haiti earthquake hit, 12 January 2010. With Ray’s persuasion, IEEE, IEEE Canada and IEEE NPSS raised funds to build six 1.5 kW SunBlazer trailers. Each SunBlazer charged 40 Portable Battery Kits with 18 Ah of storage. The units were built by Nextek by volunteers and shipped to Haiti. The systems were deployed by Sirona Cares, an NGO in Haiti, that was established with Jatropha farming. In late 2010 as the HTC project was ending, PES with support from Al Rotz and coaching from Pat Ryan provided a home for IEEE Smart Village.

"When I began my career at IEEE, Mary Ward Callan, Managing Director, Technical Activities, advised that I look to Pat as an example of how to run a society and make it successful," commented Patrick McCarren.

Pat tirelessly supported hundreds of PES leaders and thousands of PES volunteer members who have been responsible for the transformation and successful growth of PES, the Technical Committees, Conferences and Publications along with special programs such as the PES T&D show, IEEE Scholarship Plus, IEEE Smart Grid, PES Young Professionals, IEEE Women in Power and IEEE Smart Village.

Shortly before Pat’s death, he received the highly coveted IEEE Eric Herz Outstanding Staff Service Award for his contributions to IEEE, PES and to the developing world through ISV. With this award, we hope that Pat realized how much he meant to us and this was a mere token of our thank you to him. God Bless you Pat.

Important IAS Communication Announcement

We are making an effort to limit the number of emails that we send out to our IAS members.

We also want to make sure that members continue to receive announcements for IAS webinars, CFPs and other announcements that may be out-of-cycle for our newsletter if they are interested in these programs. As of 1 October, 2020 all email to our member base will be on a subscription basis only. If you choose not to receive these announcements there is nothing for you to do. If you want to continue to receive announcements you will have to subscribe to the IAS-News listserv. We will try our best to not send out more than one message per week, but in order to receive these announcements please be sure to follow the link below and sign up.
