Important IAS Communication Announcement

All IAS members who wish to receive email communications will continue to receive the IAS Newsletter monthly.

We are making an effort to limit the number of emails that we send out to our IAS members.

We also want to make sure that members continue to receive announcements for IAS webinars, CFPs and other announcements that may be out-of-cycle for our newsletter if they are interested in these programs.

As of 1 October, 2020 all email (outside of the monthly Newsletter) to our member base will be on a subscription basis only. If you choose not to receive these announcements there is no action needed. If you want to continue to receive announcements you will have to subscribe to the IAS-News listserv. We will try our best to not send out more than one message per week, but in order to receive these announcements please be sure to follow the link below and sign up.

New! AIAA/IEEE TEC Online Short Course Electrified Aircraft Propulsion Technologies: Powering the Future of Air Transportation
14 October - 11 November 2020

Overview: This 18-hour online course, presented jointly by AIAA and IEE202E, describes the benefits of electrifying the propulsion systems of large aircraft, identifies the technology advancements required to enable electrified aircraft propulsion, and details how the aerospace industry can transition from the current state-of-the-art to these advanced technologies. It covers electrical machines, power systems and electronics, materials research, superconductivity and cryogenics, thermal management, battery chemistry, system design, and optimization. It covers general concepts, tools, and information, and offers the learner a solid high-level understanding of the material.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the benefits of electrified propulsion in aircraft
  • Identify types of electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems and their relative advantages and disadvantages
  • Understand the fundamentals of electromechanical energy conversion and performance parameters
  • Understand the fundamentals of enabling power electronics
  • Understand the key drivers of electrical machine and drive designs
  • Become familiar with emerging technologies, e.g., superconductivity, cryogenic power electronics
  • Have a basic understanding of electrical power distribution architecture and the general considerations for the protection system design

Join the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community (TEC)

As a member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, there is no fee to join the community.

TEC focuses on technologies, organizations and projects enable the clean, connected and efficient transportation and vehicular systems of the future. Discussions include electric and hybrid cars and trucks, more-electric aircraft, electric rail and light rail systems, electric ships, off-road vehicles, grid interfaces and other forms of more-electric transportation.

The community discusses key enabling technologies, including batteries and energy storage, battery charging and management, power electronics, electric motors and drives, networked vehicles, fuel cells, wireless power transfer, and system integration. The community takes a leadership role in vehicle to grid (V2G) and grid interaction issues, IEEE standards in transportation and vehicles, high performance electric traction, student electric transportation competitions, and vehicle intelligence.

We are sponsored by nine IEEE Societies, one IEEE Council, and the IEEE Standards Association.

IEEE Senior Membership

IEEE Senior membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members.
