Important IAS Communication Announcement
All IAS members who wish to receive email communications will continue to receive the IAS Newsletter monthly.

We are making an effort to limit the number of emails that we send out to our IAS members.

We also want to make sure that members continue to receive announcements for IAS webinars, CFPs and other announcements that may be out-of-cycle for our newsletter if they are interested in these programs.

As of 1 October, 2020 all email (outside of the monthly Newsletter) to our member base will be on a subscription basis only. If you choose not to receive these announcements there is no action needed. If you want to continue to receive announcements you will have to subscribe to the IAS-News listserv. We will try our best to not send out more than one message per week, but in order to receive these announcements please be sure to follow the link below and sign up.

IEEE Smart Village
Three Pillars: Electrification, Education, Enterprise Development

Please view a short four minute video to see what is being accomplished within the IEEE Smart Village. John Nelson, Smart Village president, just received word recently that after a tough year, they are going to be able to fund a number of IEEE Smart Village Projects throughout the world in 2021, as well as projects within the US where Native Americans have no access to electricity.

AIAA/IEEE TEC EATS Student Design Challenge 2021
The aeronautics industry is in the midst of another revolution since the last century. On one side, ecological awareness is providing a strong push to reduce harmful emissions, and the overall environmental footprint of aviation in general. From the other side, new trends and needs in mobility are rising towards more autonomous vehicles. The reduction of weight, fuel consumption and noise has been a continuous goal for many years, in order to improve aircraft performance.

Linked to these challenges, new concepts have been rising and, in particular, in the "Urban Air Mobility" or UAM sector that will utilize electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The "dream" of an electrically propelled flying car is now starting to become reality, and several demonstrators have been proposed worldwide. However, autonomy and performance are still limited, and one main question is to know how far we can go in performance, taking into account the technology evolution. This is the spirit of the following Challenge.

Join the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community (TEC)
As a member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, there is no fee to join the community.

TEC focuses on technologies, organizations and projects enable the clean, connected and efficient transportation and vehicular systems of the future. Discussions include electric and hybrid cars and trucks, more-electric aircraft, electric rail and light rail systems, electric ships, off-road vehicles, grid interfaces and other forms of more-electric transportation.

The community discusses key enabling technologies, including batteries and energy storage, battery charging and management, power electronics, electric motors and drives, networked vehicles, fuel cells, wireless power transfer, and system integration. The community takes a leadership role in vehicle to grid (V2G) and grid interaction issues, IEEE standards in transportation and vehicles, high performance electric traction, student electric transportation competitions, and vehicle intelligence.

We are sponsored by nine IEEE Societies, one IEEE Council, and the IEEE Standards Association.

IEEE Senior Membership
IEEE Senior Membership is the highest grade for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior Membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members.
