2021 IAS Annual Meeting

The 2021 IAS-Annual Meeting conference is being held 10-14 October 2021 in the host city of Vancouver, BC, Canada. The conference organizing committee anticipates having another informative program of technical papers and tutorials on electrical topics within the IAS field-of-interest. We shall also receive guidance this year from IEEE Meetings Conference and Events (MCE) department in view of global health challenges. If you have any proposed paper or tutorial ideas for our conference, please be sure to submit them in response to the Call for Papers & Tutorials, as posted on the website for the 2021 IAS Annual Meeting.

The conference venue and meeting space is at the world-class Vancouver Convention Centre (VCC), a sparkling jewel of a facility located along the Vancouver waterfront. You can enjoy amazing views of the harbor and mountains in one direction and the city skyline in the other direction. The IAS Annual Meeting will be co-located with the 2021 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE). The IAS Annual Meeting delegates are invited to attend selected ECCE activities, such as the Monday Plenary Session and the ECCE Technical Expo, which are open to attendees from both conferences. With such a great setting for our two conferences, there will be ample opportunities for attendees to enjoy social events and networking amongst other engineers, industry folks, academic faculty, and of course students.

On behalf of the entire conference organizing committee, we look forward to your participation in the 2021 IAS Annual Meeting!

IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop – Registration is Now Open

A virtual event 9-11 March 2021

As Chair of the 2021 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop it is my pleasure to announce that Registration is now open!

While the 2021 IEEE ESW will be a fully Virtual Event due to the pandemic, it still features a full slate of electrical safety-related Papers and a Product Expo! I also think that you’ll find the special discount rate a great bargain.

For abstracts of all presentations, daily schedule, and latest information, please check the ESW 2021 website for additional details and continuing updates.

Mark your calendars for 9-11 March 2021.

We hope to "see you" (virtually) at ESW 2021!

IAS is Now Accepting Submissions for the 2021 Myron Zucker Faculty Grant Program

The Industry Application Society is soliciting interested parties to submit proposals to the Myron Zucker Student Faculty Grant Program. The deadline for application submission is 31 March 2021.

Adhering to Mr. Zucker's goal, the principal objectives of the Student-Faculty Grant Program are:
  • to interest students and faculty in industry applications of electrical engineering
  • to involve students and faculty in engineering problems related to the Scope of the IEEE Industry Applications Society
  • to provide financial assistance to students for their education
  • to provide seed money to allow faculty members to commence or expand teaching, research, or academic concentrations in industry applications of electrical engineering

In general, the program functions much like a research support agency. It is administered by the IEEE Industry Applications Society through its Zucker Grant Committee with the consent of the IEEE Foundation.

The project must be designed to produce publishable results in one year (12 months). The preferred period of performance (for these 12 months) is 1 September through 31 August of the following year. The funding is such that approximately two grants, not exceeding US$25,000 each, can be awarded during each annual proposal cycle. This endowment is the programs only funding source; no other sources, including IEEE membership dues, are used.

Follow the links below to visit our website to view the program guidelines and the program application.

Announcement Submitted by Bob Arno, North Point Defense, IAS Volunteer

North Point Defense in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Power Reliability Enhancement Office (PREP) is embarking on a massive data collection effort that will enhance and update IEEE DOT 3006.8. During this health crisis it is difficult to find locations willing to donate Reliability information on their facilities. If you are interested or know someone interested in participating in this effort please contact me at the following email address. Attached is a brochure from the PREP office explaining the program, the type of data sources, and the program managers assigned to the program. Please disseminate throughout IEEE to help us gather data to update DOT 3006.8, Recommended Practice for AnalyzingReliability Data for Equipment Used in Industrial and Commercial Power Systems.

Thank you in advance for any assistance to make DOT 3006.8 better than ever.

AIAA/IEEE TEC EATS Student Design Challenge 2021

The aeronautics industry is in the midst of another revolution since the last century. On one side, ecological awareness is providing a strong push to reduce harmful emissions, and the overall environmental footprint of aviation in general. From the other side, new trends and needs in mobility are rising towards more autonomous vehicles. The reduction of weight, fuel consumption and noise has been a continuous goal for many years, in order to improve aircraft performance.

Linked to these challenges, new concepts have been rising and, in particular, in the "Urban Air Mobility" or UAM sector that will utilize electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The "dream" of an electrically propelled flying car is now starting to become reality, and several demonstrators have been proposed worldwide. However, autonomy and performance are still limited, and one main question is to know how far we can go in performance, taking into account the technology evolution. This is the spirit of the following Challenge.

Candidates need to be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

An application for Senior Membership requires three references unless nominated by a Senior member, and in that case requires two references.

Congratulations to the newly-elected IAS Senior members.
